[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Her comment made him grunt and look away. Damn her for taking a serious situation and being adorable about it. You couldn't just make it easy for me, could you? Jaron thought in her general direction, shaking his head. If he didn't die from infection of his melting ankle, then Zee would surely do him in. "Isn't that the point of this excursion?" he asked, chuckling. "To add some stuff to the map?" He would've nudged her if he hadn't already been using her as a crutch, but it was all he could do right now to center all his weight over his functional foot. "Yeah, okay," he snorted. Women's intuition... K. Kinda like it had been her intuition to jump him on that riverbed? Following her gut put them in more trouble, in his experience. Although it was arguably more entertaining... "You've gotta be shitting me," he complained at the precise moment she did, causing him to look down at her and smirk. "Ji-," he began, though she got the word out first, and Jaron had to flat-out laugh. The situation was such shit, that's all he could do, really. Plus he and Zee seemed to be on the exact same train of thought, which made all of this beyond the realm of improbability. "Maybe this runs underground a ways, and that's what's making the tar. I wonder how far..," he trailed off, narrowing his eyes to try and see as far north as he could. He could see the other side of the natural roadblock, but tried to consider how far beyond that it extended. Feeling smarter than usual, a thought hit him. "We should let someone know this is here. It would be a natural, like... kiln, for the tradesmiths." Maybe. Did it work like that? Was it even called a kiln? "Wait a sec," he considered, turning left. "This must be where the rivers gets warmer," he deduced, and hobble-dragged Zee to the water's edge. Sure enough, the lava sunk underground just before the angle of the bank, and the water had faint wisps of steam curling from its surface. "I heard of this, but never ventured this far south to actually see it." Thinking, he looked back to the literal molten earth. "Swimming here sounds a lot more dangerous now," he half joked, then quieted as he waited for Zee to make a decision. Maybe her intuition wasn't so terrible after all... HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
Zee looked up at Jaron and frowned. "No." She answered. "Not if you're injured. If you're injured you're supposed to go back to the colony and get medical attention. Not explore on the way." Because who knew what else they would find in uncharted territory? If they had to run from anything they would be screwed because Jaron couldn't even walk on his hurt foot.
Seeing the ocean of lava made Zee more than a little frustrated. She should have insisted on going back to Exurbia the way she knew even if it meant crossing the river twice. She'd been holding onto his wrist, but now she let it go and pivoted more toward him. "I told you so." She said and poked at his stomach. Jaron seemed to be far more fascinated by where the lava was coming from and where it went than she was. She was far more concerned with getting around it so they could get back to the colony. "Yeah." She agreed that they needed to tell other people about the lava. "That way nobody tries to get home this way."
She was quite literally dragged to the river and when they got closer she could see, more clearly, the steam rising from its surface. There was no way that they would be able to cross right there unless they wanted to be boiled alive. Jaron seemed to be on the same train of thought , which was good because that meant they would waste less time trying to figure out what to do. "I don't think crossing right here is going to be a good idea." She bit her lower lip and looked in the direction they had come from. "I don't think hot water on you ankle would feel too good. So..." She looked back up at Jaron. "I think we need to go back and cross the river where it's cooler, then cross back over to Exurbia. With any luck we'll be there before nightfall." Unless they ran into yet another thing to totally screw up their game plan.
"Okay, let's go." Zee helped Jaron turn and went back they way they had come from, the whole time thinking to herself that she should have insisted that they cross because now they were wasting time. As they walked hobbled she looked over at the river long enough to see that there wasn't any steam. "I think we can cross here." She lead Jaron closer to the river and paused. "Need me to hold your hand while we cross?" She teased in an attempt to lighten the mood.

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Jaron waved her worries off, even though his ankle throbbed. "Pff, killjoy," he teased while grimacing. At her insistence, his brow raised. "I think now is hardly the time for 'I told you so's', little missy." Narrowing his eyes in concentration, he studied the layout around them. The only really option was to cross the river... but not here. With steam rising from the water's surface, it didn't take a great stretch of the imagination to determine swimming through it would do more harm than good, at least to his already-damaged skin. Just as he opened his mouth to say as much, Zee beat him to it. Of course she did. Smirking, his gaze lingered on her for a second too long. "Yeah, let's go," he agreed suddenly, tearing his eyes away and focusing on the journey. The water would feel great, to the point that it actually crossed his mind to just wade through the shallow edge the whole way... Minus the part that was near-boiling. "No," he snorted, though he let her lead him at least to the water's edge. Swimming was... interesting, and this time the only reason Zee didn't beat him was because she was hanging back to make sure he was okay. With a little help from her, they came out the other side alright, and started north without another snag. Jaron eyed the steaming water as they passed it again, thankful the ground was solid on this side. Once they were what he assumed was a safe distance away, he stopped and looked down at Zee. "I think it'll be better if I walk in the water. You don't have to, of course. I can walk on my own."Easing back into the cool liquid, Jaron sighed. He took an experimental couple of steps, arms splayed wide to catch himself in case he was suddenly in pain. Eyes snapping to Zee when all seemed fine, he straightened with a smile. "See, nothing to it. Now you just make sure you don't run into any dangerous creatures up there while I'm stuck here and unable to protect you," he winked, and continued forward with more confident strides. HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
Zee rolled her eyes. Right then, as far as she was concerned, was just as good a time as any for 'I told you so'. She was glad that he didn't argue with her over backtracking and crossing the river -- maybe having a field of lava in their way had been enough for him to pay attention to what she suggested.
When Jaron didn't seem to need any help to swim across the river Zee shrugged. It was probably easier for him to swim than it was to walk, and she was sure that the cool water felt pretty good against his burned skin. Even though he said that he was okay to swim, Zee still hung back just in case someting happened and Jaron needed her help. She climbed onto the shore ahead of him and held her hand out to help him up so they could continue their journey back to Exurbia.
Zee paused and looked up at Jaron when he said that he thought walking in the water would be better for him. "Okay." She stood on the shore as Jaron eased himself into the water and she watched, expecting him to take a step and fall over because he'd hardly been able to walk by himself on land. She couldn't help but grin as he tested out walking in the water and was successful. "Okay, okay." She said. "I'll stay close just so you can be the knight on shining crutches if anything happens." She teased.
Very little happened on their walk to Exurbia, for which Zee was very thankful for. They'd had enough adventure and excitement for one day. "The medic is over there." She pointed to the ship that had been converted, then turned to Jaron. "She's usually there..." And it was getting late, so she doubted that the medic would be out roaming around. She held a hand out to help Jaron out of the water and toward their destination.
"Hello?" She called out when they finally made it to the ship. A minute or so later an unhappy looking woman stood in front of them, her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. "You, come on." The medic said as she lookeed at Jaron -- it was obvious that he was the one that was hurt. Then she looked at Zee. "And you, go away."
