[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Offering to go on an adventure with Zee was probably the stupidest thing Jaron had ever done. Yeah, being the "big strong man" had sounded like a good idea at the time, and while he was at least two of those thing, he had jack shit to actually protect them with. He could be as muscular as he wanted, but that wasn't going to save them if some nasty hydra-like creature sudden worked its way out of the environment and tried to eat them. So what if no one had seen something like that yet? He'd heard from large-sounding things creeping around the woods at night, and every single time he'd been thankful he had taken the time to erect himself a legit cottage (with significant help, of course). It kept the crawlies out there and him in here and everything was dandy. But now he sat at the southernmost tip of what could be considered Nemus, situated on a rock nearish the river - which was too wide and deep to cross here - and felt the very real possibility that they'd meet more than one sticky situation out there. It was easy enough to pretend the world was their friend in the safety of the colonies, but just about everything outside of them screamed danger. And here he was, with nothing to his name other than the clothes on his back and the flask that had been filled with whiskey. He'd poured it back into the bottle (just the thought of it made him cringe) so he'd at least have something to carry water in. The whole food thing was going to be interesting, though. He had no idea when Zee was going to show. Their agreement had been "tomorrow", and he'd assumed she meant the following early-morning, but maybe she'd meant Earth-day. If that was the case, then he was late and she'd gone on without him... though that seemed unlikely. She gave the impression of being a girl of her word, so if she'd waited around here and he hadn't shown up, he imagined she would've stomped all the way to his place - since she knew where it was now - and bust through the front door way all in a tizz because he'd made her do extra work. So... Yeah, he was probably on time. And now he just had to wait up to... 67 hours for her to show. Yep, this was going to be great. Sighing and pushing off the rock, Jaron went over to the river to rinse out his flask and fill it with water. The day just got longer
| "So here's the brave soul," Elijah called from behind the man. He glanced at the girl before making his way over to the river, crouching down beside Jaron to dip his hands in. "Your girlfriend said you two were headed south. She's designated for it, you not so much," he said, cupping his hands in the water and splashing it over his face. "But...as it happens," he continued, "Watchers are spread a lil thin right now, haven't had too many patrols down this way. So it's equal opportunity. She can do her job, I can do mine, and you, well I'm gonna deputize you for the day. Sound good?" He gave him a reassuring pat on the back before getting to his feet. The kid would make fine live bait if it ever came to it. Not many watchers had been this way, and the ones that had...well, there were some interesting stories told 'round the camp fire. Not many of them good. When Elijah nosed his way into Zephira's business, he was more than happy to tag along regardless of the stories. He got to escape the monotony of the compound for a time, and Nemus got extra intelligence on the area. Wasn't exactly a tough bargain for either party.
"Zephina, you wanna take point that's fine by me," he offered. Or the deputy. Black liked looking at new things, even new and scary things. But always with a little distance between him and it. It could be many things, especially when you were stuck on a goddamn alien planet. Elijah wouldn't describe himself as a coward, he had seen a lot of action in his time. Nah, he was more of a survivalist with a taste for excitement. Those two things could seem conflicting, but he had a comfort line that he walked in that regard. He had a knack for jumping out of the pot before it boiled, but he sure liked the warmth. |

HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
It was hard to annoy Zee, but somehow Elijah had managed to get under her skin on the walk to where Jaron waited. She was of the opinion that the man talked just to hear his own voice and after a while she'd stopped responding to him. It was the second time she'd been out on a trip that she'd been assigned a Watcher and she didn't understand why. She felt like they had to have better things to do with their time than tag along with the exploreres, but she wasn't the one who made whatever rules they lived by or decided who did what. She just had to be an adult about it and accept the fact that someone wanted the watchers to be babysitters.
There was a little bit of relief when she saw Jaron by the river waiting (like they had agreed) but her relief was short lived because of Elijah. She wanted to walk over and punch him in the back of his big blonde head when he referred to her as Jaron's girlfriend, but she refrained herself -- but she hoped that Jaron would punch him for her. She stood a few feet away from the two men, her arms were crossed, and she was trying her hardest not to scowl at Elijah. "If Watchers are spread so thin why are you tagging along with me?" Zee asked. "Didn't watchers let stuff get stolen from the Drop Point? You'd think that ya'll would be more worried about protecting the colonies from other bandits or nomads or whatever rather than going out exploring." What kind of priorities was that? Finally, she looked at Jaron and offered a small smile. "Hey."
"Zephina."
She rolled her eyes when Elijah said her name wrong. "Zee." She corrected him. "Call me Zee." But, really, his mispronunciation of her name was the least of her concerns. His offer of her to take point was something that she took to mean he wanted her to take point, and that made her raise an eyebrow at him. Weren't watchers supposed to be brave? And yet here she was, the smallest of the trio, and she was taking point.
"Fine, let's go." Zee said, and she turned on her heel. Maybe Elijah would hang back and annoy Jaron, if he did that she would happily take point for the entire trip. "."

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]He heard the footsteps first and smirked mid fill-up, but the sentiment was lost a second later. Not to be creepy or anything, but he knew the sound of Zee walking - and not only were these footfalls far too heavy, they were also.. doubled. Jaron's brow furrowed, trying to determine whether or not he should turn around. Everyone was getting along pretty well so far out here, so he didn't feel threatened, it was just... strange that someone else (or several someones) would have ventured this far south without knowing he was there. Though, he guessed, Zee wasn't the only explorer around, and there were only so many directions someone could head. Yeah, that made sense. He'd just ignore them and they'd pass. Or, y'know, not. "So here's the brave soul," instantly had him on edge, and the way the muscles of his back twitched showed it. Whoever was bursting into his personal space right probably wouldn't notice, but if that second person was Zee, she sure as hell would. Jaron looked at the intruder from the corner of his eye, plenty of loathing in the gaze for a complete stranger. At the girlfriend comment, his jaw clenched - not because he didn't like the sound of it or because the dude was totally wrong but because the way he referred to her was disrespectful. Jaron settled with one knee on the ground and leaned slightly away from this brash individual, settling just to eye him for now. The man was clearly older than him, but size-wise they were pretty comparable. He wouldn't disillusion himself into thinking he could win a fight against the guy, but if he could face paparazzi constantly badgering him to confirm or deny rumors that were completely ludicrous, then he could handle this asshat. Unless he touched him. Expression set in stone, Jaron slowly slid his gaze to where the man made contact, then to his face. It was a good thing his withdrawals were starting to wane or he'd be tackling the dude into the river, consequences be damned. Yeah, he'd probably drown in the process, but if this guy did too then it would be worth it. Finally he got the fuck away from him, and Jaron momentarily dropped his head. This was not the adventure he'd agreed to... But he wasn't going to leave Zee alone with the bull in a china shop either. Though, her retort was beyond perfect. It was a physical effort not to chuckle, but Jaron thankfully managed to only dip his chin and smirk - an expression only she would see since Mr. Overbearing was living in his own little world and already heading back to her. With a deep, steadying breath, Jaron stood, eyes finding the girl in question. His lips twitched in another smirk because he didn't trust how his voice would come out. He wanted to plaster himself to her, not because she was adorable all garbed up to explore, but to put a physical barrier between her and... Dudebro. Yep, that seemed like a fitting name. Perfectly explained the man he'd decided to present himself as to Jaron. Jaron settled instead for shouldering past Dudebro in favor of at least walking beside Zee. "Not her name," he ground at, not even casting a single glance in his direction. He only managed not to call him something scathing because Dude would probably think it was "cute". The suggestion of the smallest person in the party taking lead was more than just ridiculous - it also showed exactly what type of man Dude was. It was the last straw, and they hadn't even started their journey yet. "No," he bit out, grabbing Zee loosely around the wrist to halt her progress. As soon as she stopped, he released her and turned on Bro. "You have two options, since you're such a big bad Watcher: do your fucking job and lead the caravan, or sit your ass down and stay here." His eyes were steel, and once again he barely resisted the urge to say so much more; but what he said was sufficient, and he needed to keep the ammo for later. Back-stepping to Zee, Jaron held out an arm, indicating the clear path ahead - which he had no intention of taking unless it was behind Dude. | Elijah frowned when she went and questioned his inclusion, as well as what the watchers may or may not have let happen. She had a lot of goddamn nerve to run her mouth on things that didn't involve exploring. He scoffed and shook his head in indignation.
"First off, Zee, we didn't let things get taken. There were a bunch of moves at play, and you'd better believe they'll get what's comin' to 'em," he said, "and another thing. I didn't just tag along out of some good will to you or nobody. You get killed, and then we've got no intel. As far as I'm concerned, nobody should leave the colony without packin' some insurance." The watcher reached a hand behind his back and produced the pistol that had been tucked away under his belt. "Insurance I don't aim to part with. We're not takin' any chances." All true, but there was more to that story. There was some buzz about the chance someone on the inside was workin' for the bandits or nomads. Hell, it was most likely a spy that got shit stolen in the first place. If they could track the explorers better and figure out their business outside the colonies, they'd eventually pin point the leak. Or at least rule them out.
He tucked the gun away and watched as the man's demeanor continued to take a turn south, grabbing Zee's hand. He smiled, listening to the man tell him how it was going to be. Damn near sweet of him, looking out for a loved one. "Oh, I see how it is. Givin' me an ultimatum," he said, walking towards him before stopping a foot away, "You're callin' the shots, chief? If I wasn't havin' such a goddamn great day, I'd haul your ass into confinement. Teach you to respect your protectors." The last bit was hard to say with a serious face, but Elijah managed it with a growl. But then he took a positive tone and shrugged his shoulders. "But hell, I guess I can take point. Truth is I've been itchin' to head this way for awhile. Glad for some company. The name's Elijah, by the way."His eyes travelled away from them to face their path, sucking some air between his teeth.
"Well, ready when you two are," he said, not at all oblivious to their objection to his presence. He inhaled deep and smiled to himself. God, but it was good to leave the colony behind for a time. |

"Having a lot of moves at play sure sounds a lot like 'We don't know what the fuck we're doing'." Zee snapped back, but Elijah just kept talking, saying how they would have no intel if she were killed. "How inconvenient for you." She deadpanned. It amazed her at just how much one man could annoy her, but just when she didn't think he could get any more annoying he proved her wrong. The gun that he pulled from his belt made her wish that she had her own to flash back at him, but both of them were tucked away on a ship somewhere between Earth and Petra Exterior.
It was the desire to injure Elijah's male ego that drove her to unsnap the sheath that her machete was in and draw the blade out. "I have my own insurance." She said as she held it up. "And mine is bigger than yours." She paused long enough to look at her own weapon then back at Elijah. "And it'll never run out of ammo." She raised an eyebrow then sheathed the machete again. "I don't need you, so don't think you're doing me any favors by being some macho-meathead-save the day jerk just because you or whoever doesn't want to take any chances. I've handled myself well enough on my own without you getting in my way." She put her hands on her hips, her eyes narrowed. "You slow me down and I'll pack up and leave your ass behind."
Zee turned and started to lead the group south, but it was then that Jaron stepped in. Her heart beat just a little bit faster when she felt him grab her wrist and she stayed facing away from him and Elijah until she was sure that the faint dusting of color that had colored her face had faded away completely. She was positively swooning that Jaron had given Eli the ultimatum, but the other man didn't seem to impressed with it. The threat to haul him into confinement had Zee gritting her teeth. "Just try it." She bit out. "I'm sure your superiors would love to know how you held up an exploration party just so you could abuse the ounce of authority that you have."
His attitude seemed to take a sudden change and Zee glanced at Jaron when Elijah was looking away. "Sorry." She murmured because she had really intended for the adventure to be her and Jaron. And she had intended on it to be fun. She looked back at Elijah, who was apparently waiting on them. "Lead the way." She said, motioning with one hand for him to start walking. She waited until she felt that Elijah was out of earshot then turned back to Jaron. "You don't have to come if you don't want to." She offered. "We could always go another time."

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Jaron silently raised a brow at the Watcher's retort. Sounds like a bunch of bravado for someone who's not gonna do shit, he thought, but he already had a big enough chip on his shoulder about the guy and didn't need to go running his mouth and making matters worse. It was pretty clear Zee was on the border of hating his guts, too - which would only be aggravated further by Dude's comeback. Aaand... Cue Zee's rebuttal. Jaron's nostril's flared in his attempt to witthold a chuckle, and later down the road, sometime in the distant future, he'd realize that was the moment he fell in love with Zephira Crichton. Jaron snorted. "Oh, so that's why you're here," he scoffed, speaking at almost the exact same time as Zee. He rolled his eyes behind Dude's back but looked over to the girl in question, smirking. At the gunshow, he snorted again - this time so hard it actually hurt his nose, and he had to dip his head and cover his face with a hand. What an asshat. Yahveh, he couldn't wait to ditch him once they got this party started; it would be a little tricky, but he and Zee could make it happen. Of course, once again, Zee's comeback was absolutely priceless. Jaron wanted to kiss her, but settled for silently laughing his ass off instead. She was laying into Dude, speaking every word Jaron had thought better off (or maybe "better" wasn't the right word..). That was, however, short-lived. Dude tried to make Zee lead, Jaron wasn't havin' it, and so Dude did the... well, dude thing and got all up in Jaron's grill. Instead of clenching his jaw like Jaron wanted to, be settled for a stoic mask of boredom. His hands, however, fisted at his sides. He really didn't want to fight this guy - not because he would probably lose, but because he felt Zee would think less of him for it. "Everyone knows confinement is for the criminals that were brought in from Earth. Sorry to inform you, bro, but your military training doesn't mean shit out here; you've got nothing over me." His tone was flat but lethal, eyes steady on Elijah's (Really? That was his name? Didn't sound nearly douchey enough..). Stepping back to Zee calmed him, and he eyed Elijah the whole way from where he was to his place at point, until Zee grabbed his attention again. "Not your fault," he finally responded to her apology, "Sounds like you're less pleased with him than I am," he finished, smirking. "And if you think I'm going to leave you alone with that psycho, you're even crazier than him," he winked, nudging her with his hip. Leaning in closer to make sure Elijah wouldn't overhear, he plotted, "But we should find a way to ditch him once we're far enough out and know where we want to head." His eyes had been on Dude, but now they swung to Zee, his characteristic lazy smirk once again adorning his lips. HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
It was probably just sheer luck that made Elijah shut the hell up and actually walk away to lead their little group off on their adventure. Zee stood for a moment staring at his back and wondering if Jaron would be smart enough to take her invitation to leave. She was sure that he had better things to do with his time anyway, like building another cabin or, she didn't know, maybe he could build himself a piano.
Jaron's comment about her not being pleased with Elijah made Zee scowl. "I had to walk all the way here with him." She said, her voice flat an annoyed. "For someone who talks so much he sure has a whole lot of nothing important to say." She wanted to be childish and stick her tongue out at Elijah's back, but was distracted when Jaron hip bumped her and said that he wasn't leaving. She snorted and shook her head. "I wouldn't be mad if you left." Hell, if she could have she would have turned right around and walked back home and left Eli to wander around the forest by himself.
But ... Jaron's idea of ditching Eli and adventuring by themselves sounded like a good one.
"...come on, then." Zee sighed as she started to follow behind Eli, though she made no effort to try and catch up with him. "Before he turns around and comes back this way." Honestly the last thing she wanted was to be face to face witht hat infuriating man again. Being alone with Jaron after their last encounter was a close second, but even when he upset her he was still far more bearable than Eli.
She walked in silence for a while, glancing at the changing landscape around them and, from time to time, glaring at Elijah's back whenever he made some particularly smart comment. Zee was genuinely looking and waiting for the perfect opportunity to ditch the watcher so she and Jaron could go off on their own. The perfect opportunity presented itself as they walked through a section of forest. With the thick brush she knew that they would be able to hide while Eli kept walking. As long as he didn't look back and catch them trying to hide they would be fine, she thought.
Gradually Zee began to slow down to let Eli get farther ahead of them and when she was comfortable she made her move. "Shhh." She whispered as she grabbed for Jaron's hand to pull him toward the bushes. "Hide." She ducked down and waited, listening as Elijah's footsteps grew more and more faint. When she peeked out she could barely see him and that brought a contented sigh of relief from the girl. Still, she didn't move until he had completely disappeared from view and only then did she look at Jaron. "Mission accomplished." she grinned.

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]He snorted at Zee's comment, chin dipping as he smirked. His eyes flicked to Dude, who seemed quite proud of himself now that he was "leading the pack". "I don't say anything very important, either," he pointed out, admittedly just wanting her say she enjoyed his company. "I know this might come as a surprise to you, but I actually don't make all of my decisions based on how they'll affect you," he shot back, eyeing her. Even though his decision to stay was entirely for her benefit and would only cause more suffering for him. His logic was super sound. "Right now?" he whispered fiercely, incredulous. Shouldn't they like.. wait until Dude had some semblance of confidence that they were following before they peaced out? Oh-... She meant just.. follow the guy. With a look of "well I'm stupid", Jaron trailed beside Zee, careful not to step close enough to knock into her. The hip bump had been a bad idea; after the awkward night alone together, they'd hardly seen each other. If she hadn't come looking for him to confirm they were still going on this little outing, they probably wouldn't be speaking at this point. He felt... torn, and more than just a little bit stupid. Her resolve was much stronger than his, apparently, and he needed to get his shit together and accept it. Bro seemed perfectly content to chat away with himself, regardless of any feedback from either of the two "lesser" parties following him. It was kind of nice, actually. Jaron got lost in his own head and was basically only staying in line thanks to herd instinct (humans had that... right?), so he jumped a little when Zee grabbed his hand. A - it was an unexpectedly pleasant sensation, and B - well, he wasn't expecting her to want to touch him. She must've seen his surprise, because she urged him to be quiet. He rolled his lips inward and nodded, ducking behind a cluster of bushes with her. Since she was looking out for them, Jaron focused on staying perfectly still. He could hear Dude's footsteps fading into the distance, but he didn't relax until Zee confirmed he was gone... Only to tense again a second later with that disarming smile of hers. It took him a beat to return it, and he felt it waver on his lips. His gaze dipped very briefly to her mouth, but he was moving a second later; this time, away from her. He'd learned his lesson. He wasn't going down that road again anytime soon. Peering around the other edge of the bushes, Jaron sighed and chuckled, though it was strained to his ears. "Where to now? I'll let you lead the way this time," he said, recovering enough to smile genuinely at her. HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
When Jaron said that he didn't say anything important either, Zee shrugged. "You're not always a self absorbed jerk." She replied as she glanced back at Eli. In the time that it took to walk to where they met Jaron she'd formed the opinion that Eli spent thirty-five out of PE's thirty-six hour days either talking or thinking about himself. "And even if you were a self absorbed jerk that could only talk about yourself, your voice is much nicer to listen to." Not to mention he was a hell of a lot nicer to look at. It took her a few seconds before she realized that Jaron could potentially take what she'd said in a negative way that she hadn't meant and she sighed to herself. "And I like spending time with you." She added in and decided that it would have to be enough to sooth Jaron's ego if she managed to bruise it.
His remark about not making his decisions based on how they would affect her made Zee raise an eyebrow at him. "And I don't expect you to." She said defensively. It was after she'd already spoken that she'd realized that she should have just let it go an ignored him because he was probably only teasing. The thing about Jaron, though, was that sometimes it was hard to know when he was joking and when he was being serious, and after the awkward night they'd spent together she was maybe a little more sensitive than she normally was. That was probably also why Eli had gotten on her nerves so easily.
"Not yet." She said and motioned that they should follow behind their guide slash protector slash lord and savior, otherwise known as Elijah. His question made her wonder if Jaron had ever sneaked away from someone before. But then again he was a celebrity and being a celebrity didn't equate to being stealthy in any way, shape, or form. Zee was willing to bet that back on Earth Jaron had been more like a wrecking ball whenever he went out in public. She could imagine waves of screaming fangirls and paparazzi and bodyguards all creating havoc that would make it impossible for him not to be noticed and, therefore, impossible to be stealthy and sneaky.
When the opportunity came to ditch Eli, Zee was more than eager to take it. She just hoped that Jaron wouldn't blow it by doing something stupid like asking her what she was doing when she grabbed his hand. Part of the reason that she didn't tell him exactly when she wanted to sneak away was because she hadn't wanted to risk Eli hearing their plan, though the chance of him actually listening to someone other than himself was slim to none. But her plan payed off and as she watched Eli disappear into the forest she couldn't help but turn to Jaron and grin, but her grin faltered a moment later when she noticed how she tensed. Rather than say anything and make things more awkward and tense she kept her mouth shut and let it go.
Zee turned and peeked once more to make sure that Eli wasn't coming back before she stood and moved from her hiding place. She brushed leaves and pieces of grass off of her legs, pausing only when Jaron asked where they were going. "He went that way." She motioned in the direction that Elijah had gone then turned to the east and pointed. "So we're gonna go that way and see what we find." She paused to let Jaron put his two cents in, but when she did she could hear a shout from the direction that Elijah had gone. A few seconds later she could hear leaves crunching and could only assume that Elijah had noticed they were gone and was coming back. "Shit. Come on!" She wasted very little time, she grabbed Jaron's hand and took off running in the direction she had pointed because she did not want Elijah to find them.

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Jaron snorted at Zee's almost-compliment. "I must be a better actor than I thought," he teased, though the words went straight to his head. His eyes rested on her a little longer than they probably should've, and when he caught himself he tore them away. This trip had been a dangerous idea. "I-," like spending time with you, too, he finished silently, mentally kicking himself for the kneejerk response. "..appreciate that," he tried instead, knowing it sounded lame. He needed to stop thinking about how much he liked being around her, which wasn't exactly going to be easy while traversing the wilderness... alone.. with her. Forget dangerous - it was straight up dumb. Get your shit together. He jumped when she reached for his hand, at first partially pulling away because he thought he'd accidentally bumped into her, and after their too-tempting night together he felt it best to touch her as little as possible. Once he realized she'd reached for him though, he tensed but let her guide him.. Yaveh, he really needed to stop reacting this way to her. She was just a girl. He'd handled her kind before. Not exactly her kind, he reminded himself, and sighed. Thankfully, Zee was all business and distracted him by getting down to it. Jaron's gaze followed where she pointed, staring out over the empty expanse across the river. He wasn't sure how far south they'd gotten before ditching Dude, but he trusted Zee's sense of distance better than his own. They probably wouldn't just end up at Exurbia... He hoped. See? He totally trusted her. "Whatever you say, boss." Smirking, he got up beside her and brushed himself off, waiting for her to lead. When the footsteps and shouting came back, it was a toss-up who grabbed whose hand. It was an inefficient way to run away from someone, but an effective method of ensuring they stuck together. Zee had fallen out of a tree not long ago - Jaron didn't entirely believe in her nimbleness. Soon they were out in the wide open, so he ran harder, and when they hit the river (which looked much deeper here than where he usually crossed), Jaron wasted no time dropping Zee's hand and diving in. He was going to hate walking in wet shoes afterward, but something told him Dude wasn't going to follow this way. He seemed to like his hair way too much to get it wet. Clambering out the other side, he laughed and held out a hand to Zee to pull her to shore. "C'mon, c'mon!" he urged. HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
He appreciated it? What had she expecting? Him to say that he enjoyed spending time with her, too? Zee snorted as the thought passed through her mind because it was utterly ridiculous. He'd made it clear on several occasions that she was a bother and that he only tolerated her, probably because there were so few people on PE and because being alone all the time sucked. Once there were more people he would probably get back into his whole singing thing and forget that she even existed. That thought caused a pang in her chest that she chose to ignore rather than dwell on. She had more than enough to occupy herself with, like figuring out where they were going.
And running away from Elijah.
Holding onto Jaron's hand and running proved to be rather difficult -- he was much taller than she was, so his strides were longer, which made it tough for her to keep up with him. But it wasn't just that that made it difficult. She was acutely aware of the warmth of his hand and even the callouses that had formed because no one on PE escaped hard labor. When the thought came, unbidden, about how his hands might feel elsewhere on her body she stumbled and damn near faceplanted ungracefully. Thankfully she was able to catch herself before that happened, but her face still burned bright red in a mixture of embarrassment and exertion and something else that she didn't want to think about because it was stupid and ridiculous and...
Ahead of them the river loomed and before she could try to tell Jaron to stop, that there was a narrower, more shallow part of the river not too far away he'd already let go of her hand and jumped in. "What the hell? she thought and jumped on in herself. He was already climbing up onto the opposite bank when she resurfaced and it made her wonder how he could have the energy to swim so quickly to the other side after a headlong run through the forest.
Zee was grateful for the hand he offered to pull her onto the bank. "Wait." She breathed as she stooped over, hands braced against her thrighs as she tried to catch her breath ... only that wasn't good enough. She flopped dramatically into the grass, her arms splayed out at her sides as she stared up at the sky, her chest heaving was she tried to catch her breath. "I'm just gonna die right here. Go on without me."

RANDOM EVENT READ & REACT In the next few steps, the ground will gave way to a patch of tar pits. Falling in would cause serious burns, and the stickiness of the substance will swallow anything left in it. Hope that doesn't include you!

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]He felt the sudden jerk on his arm when Zee stumbled, causing Jaron to skid to an abrupt (and equally graceless) halt. "You okay?" he rushed out, concern permeating his voice even though they really didn't have the time to be worrying about each other's boo-boos. Eyes scanning behind them, he thought please don't have a sprain, and was just about to hoist her into his arms, or over his shoulder, or whatever he needed to do to get them moving when she popped up on her own and continued forward. Jaron couldn't help but smirk. That's my girl, his subconscious whispered, and he had to shake his head to dislodge the thought. She wasn't his anything. Not wanting to offend her by being over-protective, he didn't swim beside her like he wanted to. She made her way plenty fine on her own, as he knew she would, but once she was on the bank, Jaron again grew concerned. "Are you-..," he began, but cut himself off when he realized she was just winded. He, too, was huffing heavily, though he did so less... dramatically. Shielding his face against the sunlight, he looked back the way they came, where a less-than-pleased Elijah stood hurling curses at them. It was short-lived, though - the man gave up the Great Protector guise pretty easily, throwing up his arms before storming off. "Good news, I think he's giving up," Jaron sighed, smiling down at Zee. She looked a little like a beached whale, but he wasn't going to tell her that. After a few minutes of her being pathetic, he stretched a hand out to her and hoisted her to her feet. "C'mon. He might just be looking for somewhere more shallow to cross. We should keep moving." Turning around, he semi-squatted and extended his arms backwards. "Hop on. I'll carry you a little ways so you can recuperate." The words were only said with a little bit of tease, Jaron smirking over his shoulder at her. Once she jumped up, he started forward again, noticing not for the first time how little she weighed. "You need to eat a cheeseburger, girl," he commented, then stopped and pivoted. "Where to, madame?"Decision made, he made a show of "cantering" in the direction she'd pointed. His shoes sloshed with the water they now carried, his legs burned a little from running so hard, and he's underestimated how much he should have eaten for breakfast, but he was having fun anyway. Messing around like this kept him from thinking too hard on how she felt against him, even in this very platonic way. Eventually he slowed, starting down a very slight incline. The ground below looked cracked and harsh, like a bunch of dried mud. "I wonder if-."He tripped, more because one foot got caught on something than because the ground was uneven. Keeping one arm back to support Zee, he landed awkwardly, the ground bending under his weight. Eyes popping open, he tried to assess the situation before making any other sudden moves, though he couldn't account for anything Zee did. "Don't move," he warned, starting to feel warmth seep into his stuck foot. Looking down, he realized he'd cracked through the ground, and a black, sticky substance was oozing up around his ankle. Thus far it thankfully hadn't touched skin, and wasn't burning him because his shoe was so water-logged, but he knew that wouldn't last for long. He tried to tug his foot out, but it held fast. It wasn't until then he realized it smelled like a fresh-paved highway, and his brow furrowed. He'd never seen a tar pit before, but if his mind's eye had to conjure one up, this is what it would look like. "I think it's tar," he divulged, "Be careful." Deducing that breaking through the thin topography would be insurmountably painful, Jaron very slowly rose to his elbows. Get back to solid ground," he suggested (okay, ordered), and waited for Zee to get out of harm's way... And to make him a little bit lighter. With her gone, he made the maybe-stupid decision to push to a stand as quickly as possible. It worked, but with his foot still stuck he tumbled in the other direction, and the changed angle caused his foot to sink just enough for the tar to seep up to the bare skin of his ankle. It hurt so acutely that he couldn't suppress a grunt-shout. He tugged his leg up, twisted around, whatever he needed to do to get the freaking stuff off. After what felt like a thousand years with his foot on the surface of Sol, Jaron managed to break free - sans shoe. He clutched his burning ankle and immediately regretted it, falling to his back and grimacing as welts started to form. HEAVEN WON'T HELP US NOW but it's better this way, warm light wash me away
Over the sound of her heavy breathing and her heart beating in her ears, Zee could hear Elijah as he stood on the other side of the river shouting and cussing at them. "I don't think he ever shuts up." She groaned from her very comfortable place on the ground. Honestly, she didn't know how anyone could stand to be around him for long periods of time and she felt bad for any of the other watchers who had to put up with him. It was only a short time later that his voice suddenly faded and Jaron gave her the best news she'd gotten in weeks. "Oh, thank God." she breathed because he was gone and that hopefully meant there wouldn't be anymore headlong sprints for freedom.
She was allowed a few more minutes of rest before Jaron offered a hand and hauled her to her feet again. Even after resting her legs still felt like noodles, but the idea of Elijah searching for a shallow place to cross the river was enough to make her wrinkle her nose in obvious disgust. "Okay." She agreed, because spending the day with the watcher wasn't something that she looked forward to. Her exhaustion must have shown on her face because before she could even take a step Jaron was offering to carry her. His teasing tone made her raise an eyebrow, but she really couldn't pass up the offer and so she hopped easily onto Jaron's back, her arms draped loosely around his neck. At his comment about her weight and how she needed to eat a cheeseburger she rolled her eyes, but a second later her stomach growled. "Or three. Or four. And a double pepperoni pizza." Because alien squirrels just didn't taste as good a pizza and burgers.
"That way." Zee answered, pointing south. She had yet to explore in that direction, so she figured that she and Jaron would bound to find something interesting in uncharter territory. His 'cantering' made her laugh and her hold on him tightened because she didn't want to slip and fall even if the drop wouldn't have been that far. She could admit that it felt nice being carried, even if it was piggyback, but the best part about it was that she felt tall. "So this is what it feels like to be tall." She commented as she looked around. "I could get used to this." But she seriously doubted that Jaron (or anyone else) would want to carry her around often. She'd just have to hope that her horse came in soon so she could ride around on it and feel like Queen of the World.
"Be careful." She commented when the landscape began to change and Jaron started down an incline. Zee really didn't like the way the ground looked, but that was probably because she hadn't seen anything like it before. Plus, with them being on an alien planet they didn't really have much to compare it to. She was frowning and looking around, trying to pick out some disginguishable feather that would tell her something about the area they were in, and then, suddenly, they were falling. She gasped in surprise, but Jaron fell forward with her on top of him. "Are you okay?" She asked as she began to move so she could remove her weight from Jaron's back so he could get up more easily. However, when he told her not to move she froze. "What's wrong?."
I think it's tar.
"Tar?" And then she smelled the stench of it. "Oh, shit. Are you stuck in it?" Which was a stupid question considering something, presumably tar, had made him trip and fall. "Of course you are." She mumbled to herself. Honestly, the last thing Zee wanted to do was leave Jaron to figure out how to get out of the tar by himself, but there wasn't anything she could do sitting on his back besides make it harder for him to free himself. So she carefully crawled back to solid ground and turned around in time to see Jaron push himself up. His grunt-shout of pain made her heart feel like it was in her throat.
She didn't know what to do.
Zee had always been under the impression that tar pits were like quicksand, the more you struggled the faster you sank. But how could you not struggle against something like that? And she could swear that she heard something sizzle, which would explain Jaron's shout. But she didn't know what to do. She didn't have rope to try and pull him out and the few branches that she did see on the ground looked like they would disintegrate if she touched them.
Somehow, Jaron managed to break free of the tar and she heard the thump as he hit the ground. Zee wasted little time in rushing back to Jaron, her eyes widening as she saw the blisters already begining to form on his skin. That really wasn't good. "Come on." She said, as she held a hand out to pull Jaron to a standing position. "Let's get to shade." She put one of his arms over her shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist to try and offer him some kind of support because she doubted that he wanted to put any kind of weight on his foot right then.
Getting to shade felt like it took forever, but once they were there she helped Jaron to sit then looked at his ankle again. "Uh.. just ... just hold on a sec. I'll be right back." The river couldn't be that far away, she didn't think they'd traveled very far from it. It took her a good five minutes to reach the river and when she did she unbottoned the plaid shirt she had on over her tank and dunked it into the cool water. Once it was throoughly soaked she made her way back to Jaron. She wasn't a medic in any sense of the word, but she'd had burns before and cool water had always made them feel better. She didn't know if the same applied to tar burns, but if she hoped the cool water would offer a little bit of relief.
When she made it back to where she'd left Jaron sitting she sat down next to him. "Here, we can wrap your foot in this." she said as she held up her shirt. "Then we should probably have a medic look at it. There's one in Exurbia," As she spoke she gently wrapped the shirt around Jaron's angry, blistered skin.
