I WANNA TRY EVERYTHING I wanna try even though I could fail Ugh what a day. Annía was having a rough time today and nothing had gone as planned. What was supposed to be a PE day long research expedition had ended early after only a few hours. She had so many plans and hopes for this trip out and now they were all dashed until who knew when.
Annía had been all of a few hours out with first light when it had happened. She was walking along a ridge when her foot slipped on a rock that came loose. That would have been fine and certainly not the first time she had done that. Though she wasn’t the best out in the field she managed well enough. This time however she fell and fell hard. Maybe it was just bad luck, maybe it was just her own ineptness at times. However she fell and landed and while she didn’t think her arm was broken. It certainly felt like it. She could still move it but it certainly didn’t move without pain. Just her luck really. The good news was she was only a couple hours out from the settlement.
The hike back wasn’t exactly comfortable but what choice did she have? It wasn't exactly like she had anyone to call or that anyone was going to look for her. All she could do is hold her arm to her as immobile as she could as she made her way back. Was it good that the throbbing pain wasn’t getting worse or was that bad?
Once she was back in the settlement Annía made her way to the designated medical area. There was usually someone around with some medical training nearby. She didn’t think she would need much in the way of their extremely limited supplies maybe even none but she wasn’t a doctor. At the very least she wanted to see what they thought. Annía really hoped it wasn’t broken. “Hello?”

All Riley wanted to do was kick back with a cigarette and a bottle of tequila and drink until she couldn't feel her face anymore. The day had been aggravating from the daybreak, starting with a watcher who had required stitches becuse he'd cut his hand sharpening a knife that he'd brought with him with a rock that he'd found. It wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't whined and cried like a little bitch the whole time. She'd damn near been tempted to knock him over the head with a rock and knock him out so she could work in peace.
Then there was the hunter that had gotten a rash because he'd rubbed a weird plant (because he'd wanted to camouflage his scent) that no one knew what it was on his face - he'd ended up with a rash that resembled poison ivy and Riley didn't have anything with her that could lessen his symptoms because she hadn't gotten her supplies in. Needless to say he wasn't too happy and accused her of being a shitty medic, which resulted in her promptly throwing him out and telling him that if he came back she'd kick his ass all the way to Nemus.
Ugh. People were the worst
There had been several other people after that and had treated a few minor cuts, a burn, she turned people away because she didn't have allergy pills or sunscrene, and there was a sprained finger that she wrapped because she didn't have any splints yet. She had just sat down in her makeshift chair and she was hoping that no one else would come in to bother her because she was tired of dealing with Petra Exterior's whining, crying population -- in retrospect she should have gone into another field entirely. Maybe ... say ... a Watcher so she could shoot the people that annoyed her. But Riley had just begun to relax when she heard the voice calling out hello. "Ugh." She groaned, but she didn't even bother to look at who was calling out. "What?! What do you want?"

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] I WANNA TRY EVERYTHING I wanna try even though I could fail In truth Annía wasn’t feeling so well so maybe she had broken her arm after all. But she wasn’t sure where else she could have gone and she certainly didn’t have enough medical knowledge on her own to fix her arm. All she knew right now was every time it moved she felt sick to her stomach. “I ugh… fell and um… I think my arm might be broken.” Though she really hoped it wasn’t because that would really suck. What would she do then? Well she could at least still do part of her job if she did have a broken arm couldn’t she? “Sorry I’m sure you have a lot of work to do and I really hadn’t planned on coming here today. In truth I was a few hours out when I fell.” Speaking of falling. Can I sit down for a minute?” Better to sit before she really did fall down. Annía had a feeling falling like that would be really bad for her arm. (broken or fractured I’m guessing. Probably broken considering everything let’s make it fun for my girl) Riley Jones

Riley rolled her eyes when the girl started to say that she fell because she expected her to continue on to say that she'd scraped her knee and had a boo boo and needed a bandaid. That wasn't the case, though, and when the girl said that she thought she'd broken her arm the orange haired medic finally turned to look at her, one eyebrow arching skeptically because she hadn't really seen anyone seriously injured since she'd gotten to Petra Exterior. Bumps and brusies, scraps and cuts were the norm, but not broken bones. "You fell and broke your arm." The medic repeated. "What, did you fall off a cliff?"
Har arms crossed as she stared at the injured girl, listening to her as she apologized for being there because she was sure that she was busy. That made the expression on Riley's face soften fractionally and she sighed. "Sit right there." She instructed her, motioning to the makeshift chair she typically used for patients. "Try not to pass out and don't throw up on my floor." Riley said. She watched Annia for a minute to make sure she wouldn't pass out then went off to get the trauma kit that she'd taken with her.
"Unforunately I can't do any x-rays on your arm because, well..." She shrugged figuring she really didn't need to explain that it was because they were on a foreign planet with no electricity and very minimal modern conveniences. She grabbed the kit and walked back to where Annia was seated and crouched down next to her. "So we're gonna have to do this the old fashioned way." She gently rolled up the sleeve of Annia's shirt all the way to her shoulder. "On a scale from one to ten - one being no pain and ten being you're dying -, what's your pain level? And I want you to try to turn your hand so your palm is facing up."

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] I WANNA TRY EVERYTHING I wanna try even though I could fail Riley Jones She saw the look of surprise and almost a bit of shock on the medic’s face when she heard that Annía fell. It was rather comical and she could only imagine really exactly what type of cases this mock of a medical ward had been dealing with since arrival. Annía couldn’t help but smile just a little when asked if she fell off a cliff. “ It was a baby one. Only about five feet or so. I uh wasn’t exactly watching where I was walking. Her knees were scrapped as were her elbows but in truth that didn’t matter to Annía and certainly wouldn’t be the first time it had happened. “Right.” She sat where instructed and did her best to not move her arm so that she wouldn’t pass out or get sick. It was usually best to not upset the ones who could help you. Especially in her position as someone many felt was useless around the encampment. Yeah the whole no electricity and just about no major equipment was an issue. She was wondering exactly what they would end up doing and was just about to say something when Riley spoke up about doing this the old fashioned way. Annía had no idea what that was but it seemed like the medic did. She bit her lip as Riley rolled up her arm, able to feel a little pain despite the gentleness of the hands. “Sitting here not moving anything? About a 4ish…” There was no holding in her cry of pain as she tried to rotate her hand however. After catching her breath and swallowing once or twice she spoke again. “And spiking around...8 or nine” She was still catching her breath for a moment after that. “Do I have to try that again?”

Riley raised an eyebrow when the girl admitted that she hadn't been watching where she'd been walking. "I bet you'll watch where you're walking now." She really couldn't believe how careless some people were. They all knew that they weren't on Earth anymore. They knew that they didn't have all of the modern conveniences that they did at home and yet everyone seemed so careless about everything they did. Honestly, she thought that if she wasn't there to patch up watchers who got too carried away with their training and airheads that walked off cliffs they'd all end up killing themselves.
Her face remained impassive as Annia rated her pain. Personally, she didn't think a four was too bad, but then she tended to have a high tolerance for pain when compared to some other people. "Okay, now turn your hand over and tell me what your pain is." She was quiet, then, her attention fixed on the girl's hand as she seemed to struggle to turn it over.
"You have some bruising right here." Riley said, gently touching her fingertip to Annia's forearm, just below her elbow. "And it looks a little swollen, but ..." She frowned, her head tilting slightly. "Do you have any numbness in your hand? Or your fingertips?" She waited for Annia to answer her question, still frowning and she spoke again. "I want to feel your arm." She said. "Y'know, for bone fragments if it's broken. Do you want something to bite on so you don't whine?"

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] I WANNA TRY EVERYTHING I wanna try even though I could fail Riley Jones Annía gave a shrug of her good arm as the medic comment about her watching where she was going from now on. “I was kinda distracted. It happens. My job involves not paying attention to myself so.” She gave the woman an apologetic smile. It really was part of her job to pay attention to the animals around her. The hunters didn’t exactly see the same things she did. Though her knowledge certainly had helped. But she wasn’t usually so bad that she broke a bone. “It was a small drop off and really it kinda snuck up on me.” It had been one of those that you couldn't see until you were literally on top of the thing. She stayed quiet for the most part, following RIley’s instructions. Doing her best and failing at turning her hand over. Annía nodded at the comment about the welling and the bruising. Though by the sound of it Riley didn’t think she had broken it. “A little on my fingertips. Is that bad?” Either way it was bad and effectively limited her ability to work for a few days. “Go ahead” She wasn’t sure if it was good or not that Riley wanted to feel her arm. The offer of something to bite down on was something to consider. “Ummm. I don’t know.” Though she did want to argue that she wasn’t going to whine. Well she may call out in pain but not whine.

"Sounds like a stupid job." Riley retorted. Seriously, though, what kind of job required that you shouldn't look out for yourself? "What use are you if you can't do your job and pull your own weight? Shit's already difficult enough around here without having the added responsibility of taking care of someone who hurt themselves because of stupidity." It was the same thing she'd told the watcher as she'd stitched up his hand. The girl's explanation that it was a small drop that had snuck up on her sounded more like an excuse than anything else, and the medic rolled her eyes. "Pay attention next time." She said. "Next time it might not be a small drop off and we'll be wasting our time looking for a body once someone notices you're missing." And, honestly, they all had better things to be doing than searching for a missing person.
Their conversation drifted back to the girl's injured arm and Riley frowned when she said she had numbness in the tips of her fingers. "It means you either broke or fractured it." She answered the other girl's question. She just didn't know which one it was. It wasn't like they could have x-rays done to see what was going on inside of her arm. Nevermind the fact that she was an EMT and not an actual doctor or surgeon, but whatever. She was the closest thing that they had on Petra Exterior to a doctor, so they'd just have to deal with it until a full fledged doctor finally made it off of the ships.
Annia's "i don't know" about not whining didn't sound too promising, and so Riley dug into her trauma kit and produced a bite stck. "Bite down on that." She said. "So you don't bite your tongue and give me more to fix." She waited until the girl was situated then began to palpate her arm to feel for bone fragments. "Mmmm ... I think it's just fractured." She said a few minutes later. She sighed because there was no way she could make a cast and she didn't have her box with all of her splints in it. The only thing she could think to do was use the sling she had in her trauma kit to keep the arm immobile until it healed or until she got her box with her splints in. But then she could also make a splint with sticks, which would probably be her best bet. She turned and dug through the kit once more until she found the sling then turned back to Annia. "Put your arm in this. When you're ready we're going to go make a splint."

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] I WANNA TRY EVERYTHING I wanna try even though I could fail Riley Jones OK she was just doing a bad job of describing what she did, but she was distracted! “OK maybe that’s just me and getting engrossed in it. I’m not usually that bad…. Mostly” Ok sometimes she was. Sometimes she was a lot worse. “My job has me studying the animals that live here. Identifying patterns, what ones are good for hunting, good for farming, pets. That sort of thing. Migration patterns, hunting territories. All of that. So I pay more attention to the animals then my own feet sometimes.” Like today. Riley was right however in that Annía did need to pay more attention and be more careful. While she could still do her work with one arm, it would slow things down more then she would like. “I will sorry. I know it’s not much of an excuse but I swear I saw a new animal. Something similar to Earth’s bears. Big things. Longer claws and tusks. I just wanted to get a quick glimpse before leaving anyways. I wasn’t about to get too close.” She may be a bit scatterbrained but she wasn’t an airhead. Peripherally she knew there wasn’t a large drop off where she had stepped but this was proof enough really that even small drops were bad. Well so much for the hope that it was just a sprain. The woman in front of her seemed to have a solid grasp of what she was doing and Annía had no reason to doubt what she was saying. A break or a fracture was bad. Though she wasn’t sure which was worse. Didn’t breaks heal faster than fractures sometimes? Nodding she took the bite stick in hand and did as she was instructed. Glad to have it despite her being unsure earlier. She had a feeling she would have cried out despite herself when the medic started to work with her arm. Besides she really didn’t want to bite off her tongue. That really would have just made a mess of things wouldn’t it? Once she felt safe enough to breathe, Annía removed the bite stick and let herself try and relax, her brow beaded with sweat. “Just fractured? So.. don’t move it?” Right now she had no interest at all in moving it so no problem there. She was however glad to see the sling the medic produced. That would certainly help. Lifting her arm she took the sling and carefully eased her fractured arm into it. Knowing that she would effectively be wearing it for a few months now. “The splints will help immobilize it right?”

Riley remained silent as the girl explained what her job entailed. "Yeah well, all that work'll be wasted if you kill yourself by walking off a cliff." She raised an eyebrow as she looked at the girl again. Honestly, she could have gone on and on and on about how utterly stupid it was to be more interested in animals than watching where you put your own feet, but whatever. As long as people like her kept getting hurt she'd never be bored and would always be annoyed. "So what kind of animals have you found? Any really weird ones?" She really wasn't that interested in what animals and creepy crawlies were roaming around the forest, but she figured that talking about them would keep the girl's mind off of her arm.
The medic sighed as she took the bite stick from Annia and set it to the side so she could clean it. "Yeah, try not to move it." She answered. "The less you move it the less it'll hurt. And the splints will help to stabilize it while it heals." She shrugged because she felt that it was common knowledge.
"Alright, let's go. The sooner I get a splint on that arm the better." She waited for Annia to stand then led the way toward the treeline. Riley absolutely loathed the idea of using sticks as splints, especially when she'd packed some in her boxes, but she didn't have much of a choice. "Watch where you're going." She said as they walked. "I doubt you'd want to have two arms in splints.... or a busted leg."
When they reached the treeline Riley began her search for sticks that would work as splints for Annia's arm. She found one right away that she thought would work, so she led onto it while she searched for another. It was several minutes later before she found a second one that would work, and when she did she sighed in relief. She was ready to get finished with Annia's arm and send her on her way. "Okay, I think these'll work. Just hold still ..." Her voice trailed off as she went to work splinting Annia's arm. "Tell me if it's too tight. I don't want to cut off your circulation."
