There was only so much mindless waiting around Noah could tolerate before his body started to rebel. Lord only knows how long he'd been trapped in his cryosleep pod, surely the last thing he needed was to spend all the time before his items arrived 'relaying and recovering from the trip'. So he was shaky and his joints ached more than one would expect them to after years of no use. What he needed to do was get off his sorry ass and get some work done.
From his pathetic campsite near the Drop Point, Noah trekked out to Exurbia. It was a relatively humid day, reminiscent of spring on Earth, and it didn't take long to sweat through his t-shirt as he made the rounds of what would soon -hopefully - become his new crop fields.
Noah spent the vast majority of the day dragging a large stick through the ground, digging lines to segment off portions of the field which he intended to dedicate to different types of vegetables. The slow, painstaking process also gave him a better understanding of the soil itself.
All in all, Noah would have called the day a success had he not been forced to take so many breaks.
His joints were in near crippling pain.
Noah had known for a long time that he suffered from arthritis. He'd come to terms with the fact that, eventually, his physical abilities would decline as the condition worsened. Until now, though, it hadn't ever been much more than an idle nuisance at the end of the day. It had certainly never left him on the verge of tears before.
It was nearing sundown when Noah cautiously picked his way to one of the riverbanks favoured by the new Exurbians. Paying no mind to whether there might be other people present, Noah stripped out of his clothes and lowered himself into the chilly water.
He very nearly cried out in relief.
From the bank behind him, Noah could hear the sound of rocks disturbed by foot steps.
“Don't even think about taking my clothes.”

Back on Earth, in her down time between call outs, Riley would spend time people watching with her partner. They would often laugh and joke about the things they'd seen and some of their more ... unusual calls. They would mock and mimick people together, and sometimes they would even make bets on what the next 911 call to come in would be. The more time she spent on Petra Exterior the more she missed Chuck. They'd had an great working relationship, it wasn't without its bumps, but they knew each other well. He'd been one of the few people that she'd actually clicked with and damn, she missed him. She couldn't help but think that he'd love to be there with her, smoking a cigarette, and watching people run around trying to figure out which end was up on this new planet.
She spent a good part of the day watching one man in particular as he dragged a stick through the fields. Honestly, she could understand people being bored, but bored enough to do that? It was like humanity was reaching a new low. Riley rolled her eyes and shook her head and found herself wishing that Chuck was there with her because there was no doubt that he'd have some smart ass comment about Grizzly Adams and the stick. She tired to figure out if there was any rhyme or reason to what he was doing, but she couldn't figure it out and, eventually, she grew bored and left.
The rest of her day was spent walking along the riverbank. There were a few people here and there, some swimming, but mostly gathering water to carry back to the colony. The whole having-to-gather-water-for-everything thing was already getting old and she'd only been there for a few weeks. They really needed to get someone on the whole indoor plumbing thing so life would be a bit more convenient and sanitary for everyone.
Sol was sinking toward the horizon when Riley began to walk back toward Exurbia and she wasn't really paying much attention to anyone around her until she heard a voice. It made her stop in her tracks and she looked toward the river and there was Grizzly Adams, himself taking a little break from dragging the stick around the field. She scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Like I want your clothes." She turned to face him fully, her arms crossing as she did so. "Finally got bored of dragging that stick through the field?"

Noah craned his head around to see just who had crept up on him in the 'bath', and was surprised to find a young woman with a head of unnaturally orange hair. It was startling against the utterly untouched landscape surrounding them. If he didn't take into consideration the massive ships landing not too far from here carrying passengers from Earth, he might say that her hair was the most unnatural-looking thing on Petra Exterior. And yet somehow it suited her perfectly.
"Finished the work I needed to get done for the day." Noah tried not to look embarrassed to have been caught, as she so eloquently put it, "dragging a stick around a field". He hadn't realized how ridiculous his task must have looked to anyone passing by. To be honest, he'd probably looked like he'd lost his mind completely, walking back and forth along the same paths multiple times to dig deeper grooves in the dirt.
"Did you enjoy the show? Or have you come back for an encore?" He did his best to keep his tone neutral, but it had been a long day and he was exhausted. He wasn't in the mood to defend his actions or explain himself. That's what he'd spent a lot of his time doing lately, too. Explaining himself. Why he was here, what he was going to do here, how he was going to be a productive member of their brand new society - as if society was suddenly going to start all over again. As if all the ingrained societal conventions human beings had been bred to have would suddenly disappear.
Noah thought most of the people he'd met so far were severely deluded if they thought life would be easy now that they got to 'start over'. From the tone of the woman's voice, her crossed arms, and the look on her face, Noah had to wonder if she wasn't just as disillusioned by their second chance as he was.

He was finished with work for the day? Riley raised an eyebrow as she looked at the man. Since when was dragging a stick around a field work? It was totally ridiculous. "So... you were working." Riley said, her tone skeptic. She didn't really understand how what he was doing was work, but she supposed that everyone needed to feel like they were contributing something to a new society, and not everyone could be as handy right away as a medic, or a hunter, or a watcher. But Grizzly Adams, here, hadn't looked like he was the brightest highlighter in the box.
"Tch." She scoffed. Watching him had been entertaining at first, but after the first three or four times he passed over the same spot it had gotten old. "The show was pretty boring, actually. Definitely not deserving of an encore." She unfolded her arms and waved one hand at him. "Had you started with the strip tease first then I'd say an encore would be in order." She wasn't a prude, she could certainly appreciate an attractive man ... she just couldn't appreciate them when they were running around dragging sticks like lunatics.
"So what do you do here?" She asked. "Besides drag sticks around and swim naked in a river that more than likely has fish that could eat you in it... and threaten people not to take your clothes, which, if I wanted them I'd have taken them already." Her head tilted ever so slightly to the side and she raised her eyebrow again, giving him a look that suggested he wouldn't have been able to stop her.
