451 . @audrey Noah Winters wasn't yet accustomed to his new world - but it went deeper than just cottonmouth, some forgotten memories, and a bad case of the jitters. After scarcely a couple weeks on planet, Noah had a feeling that this place would never feel like home to him. Maybe it was all the people camped out, wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out who (or maybe why) they were. If not the people, maybe it was the disquieting feeling of looking up into the sky at night and seeing all different stars. Maybe it was, plain and simple, that he was somewhere he didn't belong. Or maybe he'd never know.
Whatever the cause, Noah knew there was nothing he could do to change it. At least, not until his first drop arrived and he could begin working. It would be a relief to get his hands into the soil again- do some real hard work for a change. To date, the most he'd managed was a hike out to both settlements, Exurbia and Nemus, and assisting with the unloading of drops that weren't his. He'd seen survivors make the trek back only to discover their things had fallen prey to poachers enough times to know that leaving the general vicinity of the Drop Point without all your things accounted for was a recipe for disaster.
So he stayed, counted his seeds, and plotted out potential field layouts based on what he'd seen of the terrain in Exurbia. Noah sketched in the dirt and on the couple blank pages in the back of his bible. He even made a few calculations based on what he assumed the temperature was at different times of the day, and how long the day seemed to last, and how far his land was from the nearest water source… but that was just to waste time. None of it really mattered until he could make accurate measurements.
News of the latest drop brought Noah flocking closer to the Point like all the others, only to turn away scowling. Nothing. Not a damn thing that could get all these people on their way to not starving to death.
An eager-looking woman with hair like fire caught Noah's eye, and, feeling ever so helpful (but mostly just pissed), he held a hand out to stop her before she journeyed any further.
"Unless your name is Ricardo or Polar-something, don't bother. There's nothing up there but 500 cases of cigars and a penguin."

Audrey was nothing if not determined. So when a random Exterion held out a hand to impede her progress to the Drop Point, she scowled fiercely and shot a glance as blazing as her hair in his direction. She would have walked around him and continued on her way had he not explained. "I do just so happen to be a Polar-something," she said, none too pleasant, and crossed her arms over her chest. "....But neither of those things are mine. Who the hell brought a penguin?" One auburn brow raised, curious. She was tempted to push onward despite his warning, but his expression told her he wasn't lying. Actually, he looked downright livid. Like... might-kill-someone sort of livid. But that had never stopped her before. "What are you waiting for that's got your panties all in a bunch?" she asked seriously, though shortly after an angelic smile curved her lips. She side-stepped a moment later and continued on her way, pace increasing so she'd get there faster. He was a man; he'd probably missed the little box that held her microscope among all the cigars or something. --------------- Not twenty minutes later, Audrey came trudging back, hands fisted at her sides and lips comically pursed. She expected the man she'd run into to be long gone by now, but by some sick twist of fate she started to close in on him again. She wanted so badly to go around him - preserve her pride and never have to admit that he was right - but doing so would mean swinging wide enough that he couldn't see her demeanor, and that was a lot more walking than she cared to do today. So, with a huff, she trudged past him, ignoring her urge to shoulder him as she went. He'd done nothing wrong; in fact, he'd been mostly kind in his attempt to save her a trip. Still, Audrey was unhappy, and when Audrey was unhappy others knew. "Don't you even think about it," she ground out, face not even turning to acknowledge him. One again she had nothing. Once she was several feet past the man, Audrey threw her hands up in exasperation. "You'd think they'd want people to live out here, but nooooooo."or is it just me?" - Audrey

idk . @audrey "I have reason to believe it was a stuffed, like a toy for a child, but if it isn't you let me know. I'm getting hungry and penguin steak is sounding better by the second!”Noah shouted at the Polar woman's retreating figure, trying not to scowl at the comment about his panties, but his mood was already so far gone that he found himself flipping the bird at her back. That's what he got for trying to be helpful on this godforsaken planet. --- Noah was just arriving back at his makeshift camp when he heard the telltale sound of unhappy footsteps trudging up behind him. So maybe he'd purposely drawn out his few-minute trip 'home’ in order to witness himself being proven right… but what else was a man to do for entertainment? The corners of his mouth twitched upward beneath his beard, and Noah tried to suppress a chuckle. He took a seat on a rock beside his 'campsite’, arms crossing over his chest, one brow arched in amusement. Ever the gentleman, Noah offered the woman the rock adjacent. Not because he wanted to, but because it was the proper, polite thing to do. His father hadn't raised him in a barn. "What are you, our only hope for survival?” He scoffed. "The way you're talking it seems like we'll all be dead unless you get your things." `ooc notes; penguin steaks

almost friends... not BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, She shot a scowl over her shoulder at the steak comment. Yeah, a nice New York Strip sounded fabulous, but a penguin? C'mon.... ------------ It had not been her intention to sit and chat a while, but his "yeah, right" sort of response to her frustration had her turning on her heel. Narrowing her eyes at him, Audrey took the proffered seat. "Not the only. But one of few," she responded cockily. That probably wasn't true at all, but she enjoyed sounding important from time to time. "There wasn't a ton of time to study this place before sending us out here, so I'm supposed to be studying it now... But they decided I could do that without my equipment, I guess?" She sighed, hunching forward with her arms crossed. She fell silent for several seconds, trying to tell herself that she just needed to live it up while she could. Catch some rays, take in the local cuisine (LOL), maybe do a little traveling (and maybe die). But she was a scientist down to her bones, and depriving her for too long made her antsy.... very antsy. Eyeing the site before them, Audrey looked at the man sidelong. "And uh-.... What exactly are you here for?" she asked, voice about as welcoming as a bed of hot coals pierced through with iron spikes. She had the ability to be friendly... He just hadn't earned it yet. or is it just me?" - Audrey

301 . @audrey Running one hand over his beard, Noah tried not to look terribly incredulous. There was just something about the woman, though, that didn't exactly scream 'saviour of all man kind'. It was probably the way she was so easily driven to scowl. Weren't heroes supposed to be generous and full of smiles and reassurance? Then again, Noah had never met a real hero. Just people trying to do and be more than they were capable of.
"What part of this place do you plan to study?" He'd met a scientist or two already. A neuroparasitologist, of all things - because there would be so many opportunities for brain surgery on a previously uninhabited, undeveloped planet, right? What Noah really wanted to know was whether or not this woman's studies would be at all relevant to him and his work. Truth be told, he didn't see himself having much time in the coming months, maybe even years, for people who'd be of no use to him. As awful as that might sound, he thought it better to be honest about the hardships they'd be facing and the overwhelming quantity of work awaiting them.
"I'm an agronomist." Noah spread his hands, shrugged. "Or, I used to be. I don't know how scientific Petra Exterior is going to let me get about farming, though. Not when people start to starve."
Noah had always wanted to crack the code in plant growth that would allow him to feed the world in a sustainable manner. He'd never expected the planet to die, nor had he anticipated having to start all over again somewhere new. He'd never known the pressure of having to succeed, just wanting to.
There was something infinitely terrifying about knowing that failure would mean certain death for a good portion of the surviving human race.
"I hope you like potatoes."

sorry it's poop BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, "So you guys really do that, huh?" she asked unabashedly, "Stroke the beard when you're thinking?" Her chin tipped to indicate him, in case the calling out wasn't enough.
At his question, Audrey remained still for several long breaths. Should she reveal her hand this early, give him all the dirty details? Really it was just making conversation, but there was something in the air that told her that really wasn't all there was. Eyes narrowing briefly, she decided to go on. What the hell, right? Not like she was part of some big important government job... Anymore. "The parts you can't see," she said cryptically, leaning down to dig her fingers into the soil. Sitting up, she worked it between her fingers until it all crumpled apart and returned to the ground. "It's sort of hard to explain if you're not scientifically inclined," she offered, trying to give him an out. And maybe also giving herself a little pat on the back for being in the know, but hey that wasn't the main point.
Once he revealed what he did, her brows inched toward her hairline, evidence of her surprise. "So what you're telling me is you'll probably be useful to me," Audrey said flatly, though a smirk followed. Leaning back and resting her hands on the rock, her lips twisted in a thoughtful expression. "Eh, yeah... Maybe focus on the mass production bit first, then get to the sciencing." She nodded, though her frown would tell him she felt sorry for the loss. If someone told her to hold off being smart for a while, she'd probably have to smack them.
"I've always craved a pure-starch diet," she joked, rolling her eyes. "You realize you sound a little like Mr. Doomsday?" Her gaze raked over him. "We already survived that, in case you forgot. I think you can probably let up now."
Because her mind worked quickly and she made no time for stragglers, a few seconds later she asked, "So.. Do you have a name?" or is it just me?" - Audrey

300 . @audrey Noah shot the redhead a puzzled glance and shoved his hand into the pocket of one of his two pairs of jeans. He was wearing the light-washed ones, and would probably continue wearing them until they were so dirty they could walk themselves. Thankfully he'd thought to buy new pants a few weeks before the mass evacuation of the planet had begun, which meant his two pairs ought to survive quite a while without any significant issues. Good quality jeans could last years. Whether they'd make it that long out here was yet to be determined.
He didn't know how he ought to feel about his actions being dissected by this woman to whom he'd been so unbelievably friendly. First she judged the way he stroked his beard, and now she was assuming he wasn't smart enough to understand science?
"I don't know about other guys but I just really like touching myself." Noah deadpanned, watching her fuss with the soil. He'd done the same thing so many times already since arriving on planet that he'd lost count. Every time he entered a new area, he felt like dirt. Ground it up between his fingers, smelled it, hell, he'd even tasted it once or twice out of sheer boredom and the desperation to understand and make headway on his work. Needless to say, it wasn't very helpful.
"I'll be useful to you if you're useful to me." He shrugged. "And if, from a scientific standpoint, you think that making the journey here was the only hurdle, I'm not so sure you will be. Escaping Earth was the easy part. Surviving here will be the real test."
Noah hesitated a moment before sticking his hand out toward her. "Noah Winters. And you are?"

Oh man was he good at keeping a straight face. Audrey's nostrils flared in her attempt not to chuckle, and her brow raised fractionally. Rather than tipping up, her lips dipped into a slight frown - another tell that she found him hilarious and was trying way too hard not to laugh.
At the "useful" comment, she opened her mouth to reply - but was stopped before she could start. Now, her forehead creased for an entirely different reason. Much like any other offended person, her head pulled back on her neck, she leaned away, and he was given the most unfortunate expression of, 'Just who the fuck do you think you are?'
She asked for his name, yeah, but now she wasn't so sure she cared. What sort of dick insulted her? She was important, okay... Or.. at least she would be once she got her freaking stuff. She eyed his hand, giving the distinct impression that touching him was beneath her paygrade. "Audrey Polaris," she divulged begrudgingly, keeping her hands firmly on the rock, "and I feel it best if you just continue touching yourself." If he wanted to be hostile, she'd do that and more.
"So, Mr. Entitled, why didn't you just let me walk by? You don't seem the type to save anyone the hassle... of doing anything," she pointed out, expression one of faux sincerity - the kind that could be seen right through. or is it just me?" - Audrey
