JJ felt like she had been here forever and her stuff was still missing. How exactly was she supposed to patrol and keep people safe with only a knife? What if some unknown large carnivore suddenly leapt out and decided to eat her? Her knife surely wouldn’t get the job done. She’d heard there had been a drop, and JJ had decided to go and see if her things hard arrived - but of course they hadn’t. Walking away from the excited folk whose items had arrived, JJ recalled when she had arrived on the new planet.
Her time through the drop point had been ordinary to be frank, and JJ almost wished that something had tried to eat her just so she could remember the occasion on which she had helped to colonize a new planet. She remembered being exhausted and slightly overwhelmed. Her departure from earth had been abrupt, and she still in a bit of disbelief that she was on an entirely new planet. Regardless, JJ was glad of the chance to work for the Watchers - it was what she had planned to do on earth - and the timeline had been greatly accelerated.
JJ meandered slowly away from the drop, in the vain hope that her shit would suddenly come tumbling from the sky, slightly behind schedule - but still arriving. ✿

tag this acct plz ♥ BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, The sound of the ship touching down had roused her from her nap (Don't judge, okay?), and while Audrey tried to appear calm and collected, she'd scrambled to her feet like a kid worried about missing the ice cream truck. She'd thankfully had enough self control not to sprint to the Drop Point, at least, but she might have taken up a light jog...
She'd been all doe-eyed and excited when she reached the Point, but after a quick scan of the list revealed a bunch of names that weren't Audrey Polaris, she snorted and turned on her heel. Of course she didn't get anything; it would make way too much sense to give your leading scientist the equipment she needed to, y'know, determine if the planet was going to kill everyone. And that wasn't even her being conceited! That was literally her purpose.
Whatever, it was cool. She could just go back to taking naps in the middle of the day and not giving a damn what anyone else did. Since it wasn't her fault her crap wasn't here yet, she still got to "trade" with the residents of Exurbia for what she would contribute in the future. Really, it was kind of a free-for-all right now.
On her way out, Audrey noticed a particularly solemn looking individual. Sweet! Someone she could gripe with. Sidling up to the woman, Audrey had to snuff the urge to hip-bump her in greeting and settled for a meager, "You get jipped too?" Her expression screwed into one of contempt, though the corner of her mouth may have pulled up in the faintest of smirks. or is it just me?" - Audrey

JJ did look like a child who had been denied dessert after eating dinner as she shuffled away from the drop point. She was practically dragging her feet as she meandered along. The appearance of the other woman took her off guard for a split second, but her face transformed in to a close mouthed smile at the comment. “Of course.” She commented dryly, rolling her eyes. “I shouldn’t have expected anything else though to be honest.” JJ added in a slightly disgusted tone. It was still unfathomable to her that it was this difficult to get items here but it seemed like there wasn’t a problem dropping off people.
JJ paused in her shuffling to turn and face the other woman. They hadn’t met yet - but JJ hadn’t met a lot of people, especially if they did something completely different than she did. “You know, it’s amazing to me that we can be expected to work jobs when the crucial supplies are still floating around somewhere out there. “ She added. JJ shoved her hands in to her pockets with a shake of her head and a shrug to further illustrate her irritation with the lack of supplies.
Pulling one hand back out of her pocket, JJ offered it for a shake. “JJ Whitlow. Nice to meet you.” ✿

gripe fest! BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, Thankfully, the woman didn't take long to warm up. Audrey's smirk became more apparent, excited to converse (A.K.A. bitch) with a kindred spirit. For some reason everyone got their panties in a bunch on their way out here (which was quite a feat considering they'd all been popsicles) and very few appreciated her maybe-not-so-sarcastic whining. "Yeah," Audrey shrugged, "I might just stop coming to the Drop Point at all unless someone comes to tell me I'm on the list." Her mouth pulled into a line, actually considering it. It might take longer to get her stuff that way because that meant someone had to find her, but after waiting what felt like eons, was a couple more days really all that big of a difference?
"Right?! They wanted me to study the environment so we'd know what's in store for us. But," she threw her arms partially out to her sides, "Guess we'll just see what weird disease someone dies of first." She scowled heavily, not in the least bit concerned that she'd just given away her job description. She wasn't looking for recognition; she just wanted to emphasize how important it was that she had her shit. "Audrey.. Polaris," she hesitated only slightly, shaking JJ's hand. It was strange giving her last name, but it wasn't like it was any secret... It was just that no one seemed to care about it.
"What job did you choose?" Audrey asked a few steps later, keeping her tone nonchalant. It was a way to keep up the conversation on this dreadful planet that was as beautiful in its desolation as it was annoying, where her conversations were few and far between. It got awfully lonely when the only person she had to bitch to was herself. or is it just me?" - Audrey

JJ pondered the idea of not showing up to the drop point at all. Her head tilted as she considered, “Not a bad idea.” she replied after a moment with a dip of her head. ”Save yourself a lot of time coming out here for nothing every time.” she added. Though the idea was a good one, JJ knew she would come out every time anyways, hopeful that her things were there.
She nodded as the woman talked about how she was supposed to study the environment and then burst out laughing about the rare diseases comment. “Well, maybe we’ll luck out and there won’t be any odd diseases. Though I’m sure we can’t actually be that lucky.” She commented through her laughter, shaking her head slightly. JJ couldn’t even imagine what kind of bacteria and viruses lurked in this new land.
She nodded at the introduction. ”Nice to meet you Audrey.” And it was nice to meet her. She hadn’t found anyone to really commiserate with yet. Except until now.
JJ looked up at the question, ” Watcher. I was in the Army back on Earth.” she added by way of explanation for her choice. ” I’m assuming you’re a scientist?’ JJ questioned, shoving her hands back in to her pockets as she strolled along. @audrey | NOTES ✿

sorry for the wait! BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, "That's my thinking," Audrey agreed, though in truth if she didn't run out into the desert every time a ship landed, what else would she be doing? She was perfectly useless without her supplies, and she felt it. In the way she had a bit more sunburn every day from spending her hours outside rather than crammed in a lab, in the way her neck hadn't hurt in months because she no longer hunched over a microscope. A blessing in disguise, maybe, but as an extremely Type-A personality, she needed to have a purpose.
At the other woman's sudden laughter, Audrey started to chuckle. "What? It's a real problem," she emphasized, though she continued to laugh along with JJ. "We're leagues away from home - there has to be something weird out here. We just haven't found it yet." At that, her eyes narrowed and she looked around suspiciously, as if something would pop out at them at any given moment.
"Likewise," she greeted, smiling as they shook hands, and it was about the truest thing she'd said so far on this planet.
"Ah, seems fitting then," Audrey commented, smile still at her lips. "Yeah, just as I was back home. I guess I'm not very original, but the big wigs recruited me for the job, so," she shrugged, "here I am!" After a brief pause, she asked, "...Did you have anyone come with you?" or is it just me?" - Audrey

” No - it’s definitely a real problem.” JJ agreed through her laughter, before sobering up. It was a real concern - none of them knew what might kill them out here. ” Hopefully not anything too weird, though I’m not holding out hope. “ She added after Audrey’s comments. JJ was really hoping that once Audrey got going she would end up finding out that PE was a peaceful planet with no crazy diseases to kill them.
JJ nodded as Audrey said it was fitting that she was a watcher. JJ had thought that same thing when she chose the job. It was a natural progression for her. ” Well you must be very good.” JJ added, her tone complimentary, when Audrey said she had been recruited for the job.
She shook her head when asked if anyone had come with her, ”Nope. Just me.” For whatever reason, she hadn’t realized that people brought family members with them, though now that thought seemed silly. ” How about you?” She questioned. @audrey | I'm sorry this is so short ✿

yay friends! BY MINNIE OF GS "Does this planet suck, "Heh, yeah me either" Audrey sighed the last of her laughter and shook her head. It really was a crazy situation here - for "building the future", they'd sure taken an awfully large step back. But they had to get off Earth, and they hadn't had another option. Well.. Other than dying, of course, but who wanted that?
At the compliment, she smirked. "I'm less certain of that and more convinced that I just have the right interests. They approached my after I published my thesis to get my PhD," she explained. It would be nice to think she was the smartest one out here, but she'd never been one to confuse luck with brilliance. She just so happened to recognize a pattern others hadn't thought to look for, but anyone could do her job.
The next subject was one Audrey wasn't overly fond with, and she cursed herself for bringing it up. "I didn't have any family worth keeping contact with, so I'm not sure if anyone I related to is going to be out here. I sort of hope not," she said, lip curling at the thought. She almost said more, but stopped there; JJ didn't need to hear about her family issues. She'd blocked them so far out of her memory that even Audrey might get the retelling wrong.
Changing the subject, the redhead went a different route. "If we were home, I'd say we should get a drink sometime... But maybe we'll have to settle for chatting over lunch instead." Never mind the fact that lunch would probably be some form of stew made of various wildlife and what plants they'd found so far that had yet to murder anyone. "Do you Watch in Exurbia or Nemus?" she asked politely, hoping the woman would say the former. Not that it would be that big of a deal to take a stroll every now and then. or is it just me?" - Audrey

”So I should be calling you Dr. Audrey?” JJ joked, grinning. Regardless, she made a mental note to call Audrey “Doc” from then on. JJ liked nicknames, her own preferred first name was - in fact a nickname. ” I know you said you were here to study the planet, but what exactly is your speciality?” JJ questioned - she had majored in english herself, though what you majored in didn’t matter so much once you were in the army.
JJ nodded knowingly as Audrey spoke about her family. She had long ago come to terms with being alone in the world, however talking about families was always a hard thing. ” Well if anyone from your family does show up just ignore them and then if they ask why you’re ignoring them pretend the journey wiped away everything you knew expect science and you don’t know who they are.” JJ commented, and though she was mostly kidding, JJ had to say the idea was a good one if you saw someone you knew and really didn’t want to talk to them.
” Well - if my stuff ever arrives we can have that drink instead of lunch. I stashed a crap ton of whiskey in there.” She replied. ” But since said whiskey will likely never arrive, yes definitely lunch.” JJ agreed with a grin. It was nice to find someone to gripe with, who also saw the absurdity in many of the same things JJ did.
” I’m in Exurbia. Where are you?” She questioned. @audrey | ✿

"Ha, preferably not," she laughed at the other woman's question. "It just sounds so.... pretentious, don't you think?" she asked, scrunching her nose to emphasize her distaste.
"Oh, I'm an Ecologist. In particular, I study how minuscule shifts in microbial life can predict the future of the environment they're in." She smirked a little, still excited at the discovery. "It was something I stumbled upon, and a lot of people didn't believe me when I theorized it.... Until I proved it." The smirk expanded, eyes wrinkling at the sides. "It was a really nice 'I told you so'."
At the suggestion, her brow went up. "That's... actually a really good idea," she nodded, mouth pulling into a thoughtful frown. "A really good idea. I might have to use that."
"Ooh, smart girl. I wasted all my spots on things I need for my work..." Though she was smirking, she was also kind of serious. Being without alcohol out here was like dying a very slow, very painful death. A moment later, Audrey barked out a laugh. "Ha, yes... Probably best to get some food and just hope something fermented a little too much. Would probably get faster results than waiting for yours to get here."
Assuming she wasn't crossing too many boundaries, Audrey hooked arms with JJ. It was probably a bit much, but hey, kindred spirits. "Same. I wanted to stay closer to the Drop Point, even though I'll eventually have to go to Nemus for my work, I think." Shrugging, she walked on. "We'll have to see." Spirits lifted, they walked most of the way back to the colony before Audrey released the other woman. Sniffing the air like a dog, she squinted. "What do you think it is today? I vote.... some type of gruel." or is it just me?" - Audrey

"W ell - I dunno” JJ shrugged at Audrey’s comment that it was pretentious. ” You did earn it. “ she commented. For her part, JJ had always liked being called by her rank when she was in the army. She had worked hard for it, and though she would never correct someone when it came to a title, it was still nice. JJ nodded as she listened to the other woman talk about her speciality. When she commented that it was a nice “told you so” JJ laughed. ” Good for you.” She replied. ” Your field sounds very interesting - though I can’t image I’d understand much of what you’re saying once got technical.” JJ added, jokingly poking fun at herself. ” Happy to help” JJ replied with a grin, ” and if it happens - let me know, and I’ll pretend all my memories are gone too - you know, to make it more authentic.” She added, still joking. It would definitely be more believable if two people forget everything, and it wasn’t like JJ was going to run in to anyone she knew up here. ” Well to be fair - you did need all the stuff to keep us from getting some absurd mutation of the bubonic plague. “ JJ replied Audrey said she had wasted all of her spots on work stuff. ”There’s only so many guns a girl can bring.” She added, and sighed, wishing again that her firearms would appear. Her sigh turned to a laugh at Audrey’s suggestion about fermentation. She nodded in agreement, ” Not a bad idea - I can broaden my skill set to include master distiller while I wait.” JJ did’t bat an eyelash when Audrey linked their arms. It had been a long time since she had found someone who appreciated her griping and she was pleased to make a friend. She strolled along as they talked, matching her stride to the other woman’s. ” Well either way it isn’t too much of a trek.” JJ replied. She had only been to Nemus a handful of times so far. She grinned at the comment about the gruel. JJ took a whiff of her own and pondered for a moment. “ All gruel smells the same to me - but I would definitely say it’s gruel. Probably the same as yesterday. “ She added with a roll of her eyes. tags: @audrey

"You have a point," she returned, giving a thoughtful frown. Still, she was very conscious of the fact that calling her "doctor" around the masses could lead to misinterpretation and people showing up at her little makeshift home looking for her to fix them. Audrey didn't like people enough to pretend to care every time they got a boo boo. Not to mention she was in no way qualified to tend to them.
Audrey waved her hand dismissively. "Nah, it's not that complicated. Cause-and-effect, that's all you need to know." She smiled reassuringly, looking at JJ. While she loved to pretend she was smarter than just about anyone else, she was truthfully quite humble. She very seriously thought anyone could do her job and she'd just happened to get there first. It wouldn't be that hard to find a couple of people out here to help her when the time came.
At the offer, Audrey laughed. "That would be priceless, I'd greatly appreciate it." She continued to chuckle as they walked, amazed at how easy it was to do so with JJ by her side. This was definitely a woman she needed to visit often. At the gun comment, she only smirked, raised a brow, and shook her head. Yep, they were going to become fast friends.
"Ooh, yes! Please do." She could do with a stiff drink or two. Even drinking the water here weirded her out, because yeah, the stream was clear and the water cool, but they had no idea what sort of microbes lived in there. For all they knew they were all getting Lepto or Pythium every time they took a sip. The thought made her shudder. Talking about food distracted her, though, and she welcomed the chuckle she couldn't suppress at JJ's blunt observation. "Yeah, probably. I guess I can't blame them, though. I wouldn't want to go trekking out every day for new ingredients, either."
As they neared Exurbia, Audrey watched passively as others milled about. Some were off making their own meals, but many were beginning to gather around a somewhat centralized location, waiting. It felt an awful lot like they'd been teleported back into medieval times, and looking around she supposed that wasn't very far off. "Who do you think took it upon themselves to cook this time?" she asked JJ, smirking. Since there hadn't been an appointed "Chef" class, the others all just took turns. Audrey had even offered her measly skills a couple of times, because what else was she going to do? or is it just me?" - Audrey

J J smiled and shook her head when Audrey stated that her job wasn’t that complicated. JJ had been an excellent student, and while she did well in math and science, they weren’t ever her thing. She had been much better at english, history and languages. ”Well consider it done.” JJ replied when Audrey mentioned that she would appreciate it if JJ pretended to lose her memories too. JJ laughed at Audrey’s reply about distilling. Truth be told JJ didn’t know the first thing about actually distilling whiskey. Sure, she knew the process but that actuality of doing it was a different matter all together. She nodded at Audrey’s comment about ingredients. ”Fair” She replied. ” I would kill for a steak though.” She added. There were a lot of things JJ missed about earth. Steak, coffee, whiskey, mashed potatoes - the list when on and on. Taking another big whiff of the air, JJ pondered her answer to Audrey’s question for a long moment. ” I was hoping I could answer your question by smell alone - buuut..” JJ shook her head with a grin. She pondered for a few more seconds. ” I’m gonna say Tony. “ She finally answered, Tony was the only hunter she knew and she was throwing out a wild guess here. ” So what about you? Any wild guesses before we solve the mystery?” She questioned. JJ began to slowly meander towards the “mess area” as JJ referred to it in her head. JJ had cooked a handful of times since she had been here - and to be honest she had hated it. JJ wasn’t a chef and never had been. She knew there were people of PE who loved cooking - like that architect Eloise, but JJ was not one of those people. tags: @audrey
