PERSONALITY Dowan is a man who desires power and respect, but knows that such things aren’t simply handed out. With the education and cunning of the rich and the hardiness of the streets at his command, he positions himself above others by finding a problem and convincing others that he’s the most qualified to handle it. At times this can be as simple as offering protection to somebody who requires it, while at other times Dowan is required to be more hands-on. [break]
To him, people are as much a resource as money or anything else, and should be carefully evaluated for their worth. The ones he finds most valuable he’s willing to invest in, knowing there might be promising rewards, while others he simply crushes or ignores. [break][break]
HISTORY Even from an early age, Dowan’s life has been tied to the very bones of Earth itself. Born to the upper crust with a silver spoon in his mouth and a golden childhood, the young man could want for nothing. Though his parents were not unfathomably rich, their estate was exquisite and their fiscal means nothing short of impressive. Such wealth came at cost however, and as each was ultimately bound to the whims of the corporations for which they worked, neither was ever at home. [break] [break]
Lacking the attention and affection of parents, or even their strictures, a young Dowan White went out of his way to gain whatever attention he might from them. When his acts of rebellion and destruction became too much for either parent to bear he was simply disciplined by their hired nanny, and they moved to the privacy of their offices to avoid his consternation and childish distractions. Life continued in this trend through middle schooling, kicked from one private academy or another for his rebellious nature and poor influence on the other students. In his teen years, his parents seemed to finally notice him, and took action to remedy his choleric behavior. [break] [break]
Hiding him away under a fake name, his parents had him locked up in a juvenile hall in an attempt to teach him a valuable lesson. In their words, if he wished to act like a rebellious thug then he could be locked away with them, to see the world that he was trying to live in. Their hope that this might break his will and bring him a sobbing wreck back into their arms was smashed against the rocks as soon as their plan set sail, for once within the juvenile facility he adopted the nickname “Rex” and began to integrate himself into the troubled community within. [break] [break]
Though there were plenty of gangs and cliques to join, “Rex” made himself something of a lone wolf and instead played the middle man of the various groups. Friend to all, enemy to none, he was a middle man of trouble makers and despite being disciplined by his parents, still had connections outside that allowed him to act as “the guy that could get things.” He was valued for his resources and resourcefulness, but their respect was out of need, not loyalty. None seemed to actually care for him, except for a troublesome girl named Farrah to whom he became close, even giving her the nickname Mercedes. [break] [break]
As a pair they were almost inseparable, their strengths enhanced and weaknesses protected as they took to the Juvenile center back to back, side by side. Together they made plans to escape the facility and go on the lam together, living free day to day and making their fortunes whichever way they pleased. Days before their breakout was meant to occur, “Rex” was remanded back into the custody of his parents, his so-close freedom torn away by the whims of bad luck, and poor timing. [break] [break]
Because his attitude had not improved while in the custody of the state, his parents took more drastic action and forced Dowan to see multiple specialists on psychology, and drowned him in medication to make him placated. By the time he was sober enough to think for himself again, the juvenile facility had been burned to the ground and Mercedes was in the wind- gone from his life. Left with no course of action but to either cut free, or accept the place in life his parents wanted to tailor him for, Dowan chose the latter. He had tasted a life he wanted and it had been lost to him; she had been lost to him. Now all that remained for him was a sudden flashing end as he spiraled downwards into more and more trouble, or to put away childish things. His father sent him to university to study geology and engineering, and upon graduating the young Mr. White took up work in a mining industry, starting from the bottom. [break] [break]
It was excellent publicity for the family; a white-collar’s son working blue-collar jobs, down in the muck and mud with the common man. For Dowan it was a reminder of the life he could have had as Rex, forming bonds with the working men around him and letting go of the airs he was expected to put on in front of the cameras. He excelled at the work and eventually opened up his own small company. When people began to leave to colonize Petra Exterior, Dowan got himself a position on one of the ships and settled in for the long slumbering journey, hoping to create a new life for himself there. Free from the ties that bind, perhaps he could even become the man he wished to be.
