Alastair C. Holgrave

Alastair enjoys emotional distance from other people, happily dwelling in a state of meaningless flirtation and shallow friendships. Sincerity is his bane, mischief his boon, and no matter how many people he’s disgruntled with his pranks, he has a sort of charm that smooths over their ruffled feathers; saying the right thing at the right time, noticing little details, complimenting endlessly-- slipping away from confrontation like a slippery eel.
A reactive personality, he acts according to how he feels with little care for the thoughts and emotions that might be running through the other person. He is quite capable of pushing people's buttons; and though he sidesteps confrontation, he is not above throwing thinly-veiled insults-- sprinkled with a healthy dose of sarcasm.
However, there’s a difference between Alastair and the common joker. He knows when to stop. Whilst he is a joker by day-- he is his polar opposite by night. He knows the pressure that comes with protecting what’s left of humanity, and his worst enemy-- sincerity-- drapes across his shoulders like a manifestation of that responsibility. With clear, ruthless, efficiency he weighs the outcome of his every action-- and takes full responsibility for whatever may come. For, beneath the joker, there’s a world of fire and steel.
One day, he might tell you that he was born in Maine, to a wonderful little couple: Johanns and Maddie. Then he’ll tell you that he attended college-- pursued a degree in electrical engineering, with an ROTC scholarship. Straight out of college, he went into the Navy, and from there-- he worked until his service ended. Then, he withdrew to Maine and took up a lovely little cottage to write steamy romance novels, of which he sold many (people on the brink of extinction tend to love the sweet escape of romance). When the end of the world drew near, he packed up-- got on a shuttle-- and prepared for a new life, where he put his training in the military to use and became a Watcher.
On another day, he might tell you that he was born in the heart of Russia, far away from civilization-- and was raised by a pack of she-wolves; suckling like Romulus and Remus on the sweet milk of the wild. That he educated himself in the ways of the wolves, in the dead of winter, and when the world came to an end-- he boarded a shuttle and came to Petra Exterior-- putting his skills as a savage man to use as a Watcher.
Maybe, if you’re lucky, he’ll say that he was born in a small coastal town to a loving family: father, mother, grandfather. That, when he was a kid, he’d help out with his grandfather’s Inn, running errands and folding towels. And that, when he graduated high school-- he hightailed it out of there-- joined the coast guard-- did a lot of good work before everything came crashing down.
It doesn’t matter what ‘Alastair Holgrave’ told you, just know this: he'll protect you, serve the people, make sure that the community feels safe-- but don't trust him for a second. The man has secrets, and he'll do anything to keep them that way.
