[googlefont="Kaushan Script"] This is how I show my love. I made it in my mind because I blame it on my A.D.D. baby. This is how an angel dies. I blame it on my own supply. Blame it on my A.D.D. baby. Maybe I should cry for help. Maybe I should kill myself. Blame it on my A.D.D. baby. Maybe I'm a different breed. Maybe I'm not listening. So blame it on my A.D.D. baby Gjan The best part about being best friends with an ursa was that nothing usually messed with them. They could walk out into the open without a care in the world and even the vespers would leave them alone. Really the only thing they had to worry about were the worms and, well, those strange creatures that fell out of the sky in those shiny, odd shaped objects. When those new creatures had arrived Gjan had been curious about them, as had some of the other squis. They had all thought they were safe in the trees because the new things were on the ground, but that wasn't the case. Some of them had these things that they could hold in the paws. The thing would go BOOM and something would jump out of it and attack them and kill them. Whatever it was was strong enough to work on the Ursas, too.
But there weren't any of them around, and so, Gjan sat perched at the very tip top of his best friend's antlers. Somewhere in their wandering he'd managed to find a pecan (or PE's equivalent) that hadn't been totally scorched by Sol. He held it in his paws as he gnawed at the shell. Bits and pieces of it fell, into the fur on Qën's head, but Gjan kept gnawing until he finally got to the treasure hidden beneath the shell. It took little time after that for the tiny Squi to devour half of the morsel and he was just about to eat the other half when he paused and looked down at his friend.
He held the other half of the pecan in his mouth as he made his way down Qën's antlers. He jumped back and forth, from one antler to the other until he made it all the way down to Qën's head. Once there he stopped long enough to pick the crumbs out of the fur and toss them onto the ground -- it would have been so rude to just leave food crumbs all over the top of his friend's head. It was only after he was satisfied that there was not a speck of food in Qën's fur that he began to inch his way down onto the Ursa's snout. Gjan took the piece of pecan that he'd been holding and leaned down, "Try this." he squeaked said and waited for Qën to open his mouth so he could toss the pecan in.

[googlefont=Poppins] Qën hadn't made the decision to trek to the mountains without considering all sides of the equation (who knew there were more than just two?), and leaving Gjan behind had weighed heavily on him. But when he told his friend of the adventure, the little squi had scurried up his antlers and refused to move, regardless of how much Qën tried to persuade him to think of his family group. Disregard the fact that he couldn't even count how many of the little buggers there were, and he was pretty sure it stretched as far out as Gjan's great-aunt twice removed (he wasn't sure how that worked). Gjan still hadn't moved, so to the mountains they went. Now they stood among a scraggle of wiry trees that bore a striking semblance to Qën's antlers. It was the first half of the day, so it hadn't become quite as ungodly hot as it would, and the foliage would be able to shade them a while longer. He was munching on a bush filled with thick, savory leaves the Scorch either had yet to - or couldn't - ruin. Whatever it was, it was delicious, and Qën was sad this didn't grow where his family usually roamed. A blip of anxiety coursed through him as he thought of how where they were shouldn't matter, anyway, since he should really have his own sleuth by now... But he just couldn't bring himself to do it. A- none of the females wanted his color in their like (talk about boring; B - a family meant staying in one place; C - staying in one place meant not being able to travel the world like he wanted. Sighing, he shook his head slightly - and immediately froze. Eyes shooting upward, he checked to make sure he hadn't dislodged Gjan. "Sorry buddy," he grunted, offering no explanation because it wasn't needed. He'd had the family conversation with Gjan a thousand times over; his friend knew when Qën's mind got caught on it now. He was about halfway through denuding the shrub when Gjan clambered down onto his head, and Qën laughed at the grooming. "I appreciate that," he chuckled, even though he could've just shaken everything off and called it good. Since he hadn't been paying attention to what Gjan was eating, he crossed his eyes now to try to focus on whatever he was holding in front of his nose. It smelled.. nutty, which equaled delicious. Without protest, he opened his mouth and bit down only once Gjan was safely out of the way. "Mm, this is really good. Where did you find it?" he asked, then realized he'd seen the squi pick up something on their way here. It had looked like a rock to him, but maybe it was one of those nuts that had its own little house. Qën never took the time to differentiate between the two, when such a small thing offered so little nutrition to him anyway. "Here, try this," he offered, tearing off a twig from the shrub and maneuvering it so Gjan would be able to grab it from his mouth. "I think you'll like the buds."image/code by vetti

They had talked about family a few time before, but Gjan didn't think he'd ever been able to really explain just how big his family really was. There were aunts and uncles and granparents and greats and great-greats and, well, one missing squi wouldn't hurt them. Hell, they probably wouldn't even miss him because there were so many others that could take his place and new babies to worry about because his numerous sisters and brothers were already popping out little baby squis. Actually, he was the only one that hadn't found someone to settle down with and make babies, and he was perfectly fine with that. Adventuring with Qën sounded much more fun than feeding and babysitting little squis.
"It would be rude not to." He had replied to his friend's thanks. "I'd never leave crumbs all over you." Which was saying a lot, considering he was the type of squi to throw things at other Ursas and humans .... and many other animals that teased him because of his size. Just because he was a squi didn't mean that he didn't deserve a modicum of respect.
It made Gjan delightfully happy that his friend enjoyed the little treat that he'd decided to share. "On the ground." He answered. "They fall outta the trees before the heat, usually. I saw some of those weird two legged things, the ones that fell out of the sky? I saw them eating them, too." It had annoyed him that they would be eating those pecans, because they were the staple of a squi's diet. And Gjan was greedy enough to not want the humans to touch them or even look at them.
He eyed the twig and the buds that Qën held out to him before finally grabbing it with his paws. He usually wasn't one to like, what he called, vegetables, but he would try it. Gjan placed the twig between his teeth and scurried back up Qën's antlers and made himself comfortable. He was hesitant and took the tiniest nibble out of a bud, but the nibble was so small that he couldn't really taste it. So he took a big bite and immediately regretted it. It took every ounce of strength in his tiny body not to spit the bud out --mostly because the chewed up thing would land directly on top of Qën's head. So he swallowed the gross veggie. "You actually like that?" He stuck his tongue out and ran his paw over it, trying to get the pieces that remained out of his mouth. "Yuck!"

[googlefont=Poppins] "I feel like they'd be too much work for me to eat regularly," Qën pointed out, running his tongue along his teeth. It would be a good thing to hoard if the goings got tough, though; he'd have to keep them in mind. "And someone sounds a little annoyed," he laughed, looking up even though Gjan was far too close to focus on. "Don't tell me you're threatened by them," he joked, though he couldn't keep his voice entirely light. Both of them had seen members of their species taken out by those creatures, and while everyone suffered losses from time to time, the mass influx of their kind was wreaking havoc on the planet. Qën tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and believed they just hadn't learned the way of the world yet, but he hadn't personally been hunted, either. He knew was one of few who felt the way he did. "Oh, I'm so sorry to poison you," he chuckled, having to concentrate so he wouldn't accidentally bounce Gjan right onto the ground. Rolling his eyes, he went back to eating what he considered good food, still smirking at his friend's reaction. He'd always been a little dramatic, but it was part of why Qën liked him so much - never a dull moment around the little squi. The smell of burning fur caught his attention, and Qën quickly swung around (sorry, Gjan) to see a patch on his rump smoking. A bit of daylight had managed to break through the trees' protection, and with an annoyed growl he sidestepped to avoid the area. It was unlikely that would be the only weakness in the barrier, however; they needed to get going. "We should get inside," he grumbled, looking up to-.... His antler, sans Gjan. Ah, crap."Uh... little buddy?" he said quietly, then, when there was no immediate response, repeated it more loudly. Careful to avoid the patch of sunlight, he stuck his nose to the ground and started sniffing around for his friend. He must've accidentally thrown the squi when he whipped around, but he shouldn't have gone that far, right? Trying not to panic - because he knew how Gjan liked his games - he brought his head up to scan their surroundings. If the squi was motionless, though, Qën wouldn't be able to see him. image/code by vetti
