"They're leaving!" Axane came to a skidding halt before his brother, nearly slipping on a wet patch in the damp soil. He wobbled precariously before righting himself, blinking at Qën. Then disapproval crossed his face and he snorted, "You and your pets." Seriously. Qën's obsession with these lesser creatures was getting out of hand. Reaching out without permission, he batted at the little Mim roughly and watched it scurrying behind Qën. Hmph. If it had been Axane who found it first, it would be sitting nicely in his stomach by now. But noooo, Qën had to go and play around with it. Like it could even understand him. Like it could do anything for him, when it was so low on the food chain that even stupid weak little Squis looked down their noses at them. "Anyway," he continued, along his original train of thought--and shout. "The aliens are leaving! I saw them packing their... whatever. Things." Whatever-things like the metal contraptions that made hideous noise, and herds of diseased foodstock that also made hideous noise. There was a great deal of shouting, a lot of movement--that frankly unsettled Axane--and then in a pack, they started up toward the mountains. Personally, Axane would have liked them to stay--stay and burn! "Mother says we might have to move soon too, if we want to escape the heat." @ QënMADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

[googlefont=Poppins] Qën's head pulled back as his brother nearly careened into him, a look of amusement crossing his face before he rolled his eyes. "Not forever," he pointed out, gaze following a few of the aliens as they hauled what belongings they had behind them. They looked beyond tired, and Qën wished he could offer them help without being violently shooed away. "And will you stop yelling? You're scaring them," he scorned, noting how the aliens flinched and looked about as Axane's voice floated their way. He didn't blame them - an Ursa's call was quite.. strange, compared to the succinct, clipped speech the two-leggeds communicated with. He wanted to learn it, but doubted he'd be able to articulate their words in this form. Plus, he had yet to get close enough to one to hear it clearly. At the disapproval, Qën raised a brow. "You act like we're carnivorous," he chided, shaking his head. "We're not, in case you forgot." Though he couldn't see the little creature that now hid behind his right ear, his eyes pointed that direction anyway. "I won't let him hurt you," he cooed, in a language Axane was unlikely to know because these lesser creatures didn't speak Ursan. He'd get flack from his brother for speaking it, but the little brat was going through puberty and Qën took everything he did with a verrryyy large grain of salt. Flinching at the boy's continued screeching, Qën decided to wait for him to settle before trying to speak again. "You know I can't really stay with you," he reminded gently. "I'm too old. I'm supposed to have my own group by now." But he didn't. He didn't really care to have one, either. He'd procreate eventually, but for now he was plenty satisfied moving around the area and learning the languages of the other creatures there. It wasn't like any of the females were all that interested in him, anyway - they were a gorgeous array of colors, and he was a boring brown. No one wanted that in their gene pool. He was actually considering venturing farther, to the point that he wouldn't be able to come back to check in with Axane at the end of the day. That would go over poorly, though; despite how much crap his little brother gave him, he still looked up to Qën, and Qën knew it. He'd considered more than once that the reason Axane was beginning to act out was because their father had been pushing Qën away more and more over the past months. He was well past the age a male Ursa should stay with the group. "Why are you following me, anyway?" he asked, even though he'd really just been in this area because there was a berry bush that held the sweetest fruits he'd ever tasted. He shared everything with Axane, but this bush he'd kept to himself, because his brother wasn't very good at rationing. It would be nice if he went home so Qën could eat in peace, and the Mim could go back to doing whatever it had been before the Ursas interrupted its day. @axane -- you know you have to create a Mim now, right xP image/code by vetti

"Yes, not forever," Axane repeated darkly. And no, no he was not going to stop 'yelling' because that wasn’t even yelling in the first place. That was Axane’s default baseline tone of voice and if the aliens didn’t like it, they could go kiss the sun and be done with it! Ignoring Qën’s comments on their eating habits—because technically, yes, they weren’t carnivorous but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be curious—he snorted. "Rude." Speaking some inferior language right in front of him! Qën could’ve been insulting him to his face, and he wouldn’t know it! Not that Axane thought Qën would; he wasn’t that much of a jerk. But still! "Nnrrrgg!" He let out a purely frustrated noise and glowered at the mim so hard—with the fury of a thousand Sols—that he sent it scurrying into hiding again. "That doesn’t mean you have to leave forever!" Yes, Qën was a little too old to be living with them and yes, Ursas younger than him already had established families—some with cubs, even—but… but…! "And I wasn’t following you, I was just. This was the way I was walking anyway!" Axane swiped irritably at a patch of grass underneath his paw. "I was going to see if I could find…" a group of Squis to bully for fun. "…some berries!" Totally plausible; Axane did love berries. "And anyway. Why are you all the way out here? What were you going to do, follow the aliens?" Almost as soon as he asked, his gaze grew suspicious. Axane said it to be sardonic but who really knew? Who knew with Qën, and his crazy obsession with these dangerous aliens?! @ QënMADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

[googlefont=Poppins] "Not forever," he corrected gently, "But for more than a day at a time." He knew even that would get some rebuttal, but it was just the way of their world. Besides, it would probably be good for Axane to figure things out on his own... He'd been Qën's shadow all his life, and while he hadn't exactly picked up his older brother's soft ways, he also hadn't had to deal with the rigors of being on his own. Qën always stood up for him when retribution should have been handed down, even when he probably should've let the hammer fall. Axane was his baby brother - of course he was going to protect him. He definitely needed to leave. His eyes strayed to the aliens, making their way north. Maybe he could go with them, take the time to learn their language and possibly integrate. That was a heavy commitment, though... He'd have to think on it. Axane would be verrrry displeased. "...You are a terrible liar," Qën snorted, smacking his brother's shoulder amicably. "Since when are you motivated to walk this far for berries?" They were pretty far from their family unit, and although Axane was getting old enough now that he should, also, technically be looking to start his own group, Qën had assumed he'd stay behind. That had been a stupid assumption, though - where Qën went, Axane typically followed. At his brother's next question, Qën's jaw tensed. That hadn't been his intention coming out here, but now it was... How had Axane guessed already? He really didn't like the way the boy was staring at him now, causing Qën to grunt. "It would give me something to do other than feel like a disappointment to our parents," he pointed out, even though that wasn't really the case. Their parents had always been supportive of him, even when they probably shouldn't have been. "And what about you? Are you going to stick around?" he asked, tone dry. He rarely got upset with his brother, but the circumstances were starting to fluster him. @axane --- sorry for the wait! image/code by vetti

Well it sounded plausible to him! He glowered at his brother, hard, for calling him out (however gently) on his lie. Axane hated being called out on lies. They always seemed all right to him, but apparently held no more weight than a filmy spiderant web. Damnit. If only he knew the secret to lying convincingly... "I like berries," was Axane's only sulky response, gaze shifting to the side briefly. Then it swerved right back onto Qën. "You're not--!" he began hotly, hackles rising at the mention of Qën being 'a disappointment.' No such thing! Qën was no disappointment! Never! He was... he was intelligent, and kind (too kind, really) and gentle (too gentle, actually) and inquisitive (waaay too inquisitive, if you asked Axane). He let Axane follow him around ever since Axane was a cub. Qën never left him far behind; he protected him, and he never made Axane feel as though he were some sort of unwanted burden. Until now. Until lately, when their opposing views drove a wedge between them. Some days, Axane felt like his presence was genuinely unwanted. Like Qën couldn't get away from him fast enough, and it hurt, he wasn't going to lie. It felt like he wasn't losing only a brother, but also a best friend and a hero. Putting Qën up so high on that pedestal probably wasn't fair--to Axane or to Qën himself--but he couldn't help it, either. "Maybe." His tone was lofty. "Maybe I will!" On pure spite alone, Axane would do just what he knew Qën didn't want, but he wasn't fond of the Scorch and he was still something of a mama's boy at heart. The thought of not seeing their parents (and his mother) for months was already an uncomfortable prickle in the back of his mind. "I'll--I'll eat them all!" He glowered in the direction of the aliens. Oh, if only. If only he could plow through them and end every single one of them. ---- @ QënMADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

[googlefont=Poppins] At his brother's outrage, Qën smirked. "I know, I know..," he sighed, avoiding Axane's gaze. Axane thought the world of him, and Qën loved him dearly for it. He felt, though, that this conversation was about to change things... Startled by the snap of Axane's tone, Qën raised a brow and swung his gaze back to him. "Why so indignant?" he asked, taken aback, moments before Axane's anger was directed elsewhere. Had Qën been this unpredictable when he was going through puberty? He didn't think so, but it was hard to judge oneself, especially in retrospect. "Mother would be quite disappointed if you did that," he pointed out, words gentle. Father would be, too, but they both had a closer relationship with the maternal side of the equation than the paternal. Eyes going back to the two-leggeds heading north, Qën briefly wondered if he should just leave now. On one hand, that sounded like the worst possible idea - Axane was already upset, and walking out on him now would only add fuel to the fire. On the other, it was fabled that quick, succinct goodbyes were the most efficient kind. Did he care about efficiency, though, when his little brother's feelings were on the line? He was young, and he was rash - already far too delicate. With a sigh, Qën turned to angle himself in the direction of home. He could come back for the berries later. "Come on, spitfire, let's get home before someone wonders if you've run away" He meant it as a tease, but his current anxiety kept it from being as light-hearted as he would have liked. To distract them both from the seriousness of separating, Qën turned suddenly to look at his brother. "Want to see who can carry the most food back?" he asked, good nature breaking through. Last time they'd played, it had gotten pretty interesting. Axane had managed walking on his back legs for an impressive distance, which Qën couldn't due to the extra weight his antlers put on his head. But he could use them as racks to carry more stuff, too. "Betcha I'll win again," he teased, even though it had been a draw. @axane image/code by vetti

"Don't even start," Axane grumbled, at the mention of their mother. Yes... she would be extremely saddened to see her youngest traveling down a divergent path. Their family was raised on the principles of acceptance and kindness, neither of which existed very much in Axane--at least with regards to some of the lesser species. He was, however, Polite with a capital P to some of the more aggressive creatures roaming the land (mostly because his life sometimes depended on it). Although Qën eyed the aliens--and Axane beadily eyed Qën in return--he seemed to think better of whatever crazy scheme was in that head of his. Axane's heart felt lighter as his brother turned away from the oh-so-intriguing aliens, directing his steps towards their den. He even managed to overlook the strained joke that Qën made, giving him a fond little nudge, antlers clacking against antlers. Everything was better when Axane had his way, after all. His eyes narrowed, however, at the clear challenge that his brother set down. "Okay first of all, you didn't win last time, and second of all, you're not gonna win this time. I have A Plan," he declared with a certain flavor of capitals, trying hard--and failing--not to appear smug. But before Qën could count them down or anything, he trotted off towards the nearest tree to begin haphazardly stripping it of tender young leaves, shoots and branches. That was really his whole plan; to get an unfair head start. ---- @ Qën MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

[googlefont=Poppins] Qën's mouth pulled into a line at his brother's reprimand. He knew the boy wouldn't want to hear it, but that was precisely why he'd said it - because they both knew he was right. Both their parents were kind and compassionate to a fault, but father was more inclined to waver from that when he was frustrated. Qën took after their mother; Axane clearly took after the other. Sighing at the friendly bump, Qën returned it. One day very soon, his brother was going to have to learn that he couldn't always have his way. Of course, that meant Qën was going to have to stop giving it to him. He cared so much for the cub that he couldn't bear to see the boy upset in any way... But leaving would solve that, wouldn't it? He wouldn't see the upset, because he wouldn't see Axane. The thought caused his chest to ache. Thankfully, Axane took the proposed game in stride (there had been a 50/50 chance he'd reject it for what it really was - a distraction). Smirking, Qën prepared to count down - only to have his brother get an unfair head start. "Hey!" he barked out, and couldn't suppress a chuckle as he ran after him, scrambling the branches Axane managed to down so it would take longer for him to round them up. Changing direction, Qën went over to a patch of younger foliage and stripped several lignin-less pieces with his antlers, where the bits stuck. He even managed to get a whole shrubbery stuck up there, which caused him to look smugly back at Axane. ...And promptly lose his self-impressed expression. "Where did you get that?" he asked incredulously, eyes wide on the giant bramble his brother had managed to snag. "There's no way you'll be able to carry that the whole way home, and you know the rules," he pointed out, mostly to make himself feel better. @axane -- hope you don't mind this xD image/code by vetti

Despite their increasing frequency of arguments, Axane still very much loved his brother and he liked to believe that while he drove Qën up a tall tree most days, that Qën loved him too. They were still brothers--nothing could ever change that. Axane disapproved of the antics that his brother got up to with the aliens, but that didn't mean that he automatically stopped looking up to him. He still thought very highly of Qën, despite his singular obsession with the two-legged race that invaded their territories. But. But! Scattering his already messy pile of branches? That was cause for war!Growling, Axane hastily used the tips of his antlers to push the pile back into place. "Cheat!" he yelled, in the sort of shrill shriek that probably made anything with ears within a ten mile radius jump. "Our parents raised you better than this!" (Which was probably a little rich coming from Axane of all creatures.) He was about to go and take a swan dive onto the patch that Qën had staked out just to be a nuisance when he spotted it--the largest bush around. Somehow, Qën missed it in his mad rush to be a dirty cheater, but Axane managed to get over to it and uprooted it with several fierce yanks and low, labored grunts. He stood there on his hind legs to better display his prize, as the smug look faded from Qën's face. "HAH! Look at what I--whoa!" Axane tottered. The bush was heavy, especially with large clumps of dirt clinging to its roots that fell in a fine shower about his face. Dirt and dust got into his eyes and up his nostrils. Axane sneezed, snuffled and lost his balance completely, landing with a heavy thud onto his back. He flailed his arms and legs wildly to try and right himself, before tipping over onto his side, panting hard. "I-I can get this thing back! Just you... just you watch!" As soon as he got up... Just as soon as he got up, he'd start back for the den. Failing that, he was not above hitching a ride by latching onto one of Qën's hind legs. ---- @ Qën | lmfao I don't even right now. [googlefont=Poppins] Apparently Axane surpassed his limits... yet again. Chortling, Qën watched as his brother tumbled over, the bush severely putting him off balance. He came down with a benign-sounding crash, so instead of rushing to his aid, Qën continued his quest for the best food. With Axane down for a few seconds, it would give him a nice head start... Picking up a jog, he started home with what he already had in tow. It would be more than enough, because his brother would have to scramble to collect what pieces he could in order to not be left far behind (and lose, of course). Qën was confident he'd be taking the win this time, paws down. Flicking a glance over his shoulder, he smirked at Axane lumbering to a stand. Definitely winning! he grinned to himself.. ..And tripped into a hard-floored depression, having just enough wherewithal to tuck one shoulder so he went over sidelong rather than straight over his head - which would likely break his neck thanks to his antlers. Body realizing where he was before his brain did, his eyes went wide and he scrambled out of the pit, leaving about half of his food behind. Not a moment later, scalding steam erupted, shooting his earnings far into the sky before they either disintegrated or started their slow descent back to land. Panting, Qën waited for the onslaught to end, eyes fixed past it in anticipation of making contact with his brother. The trip had been dumb on his part. He knew those vents were there, but in his haste to beat his brother (and probably because he was still a little emotionally charged from their earlier chat), he'd misjudged the distance. Now he was definitely losing, especially since he'd left Axane to get up on his own back there. Sighing in defeat, he slumped back to the ground, allowing his cheek to rest on the ground dramatically. He was a little too close to the nearest vent for comfort, but he'd get over it. He'd taken that fall pretty hard, and he needed to catch his breath. @axane image/code by vetti
