"Ugh..." Xiao reached up to wipe a bead of perspiration from his brow. The heat pervading his body didn't seem to have as much to do with the rising sun so much as it stemmed from the inside, from his core. His forehead felt hot; his skin was clammy and he had weird fluctuations in vision, sometimes hyper-clear and other times blurry. Uncoordinated legs--feeling like jelly--wobbled with every other step and he was beginning to think that running that last half mile back to the mountain sanctuary had really taken something out of him. The one hand that had been stung by a plant's thorn had swollen considerably; it looked like he was wearing a puffy glove. Worriedly he stared down at it as he navigated the narrow path into the series of caves that the colonists called 'home' during the scorch. There was no ignoring the fact that something was happening to the hand--and to him. For what felt like forever, he trudged down the tunnels crudely hacked into stone, until he reached the general gathering area. Xiao swallowed; his throat was dry and constricted, making even breathing difficult. Breaths coming up into short bursts now, he stumbled into someone and mumbled an incoherent apology, and then a vague question. "Doctor?" The man stared at him for a second, at his flushed face and unfocused eyes. "Over there. The redhead. You okay...?" "...yeah." Xiao tried to muster up a smile but his lips only twitched. "'m fine." Redhead. It took his sluggish brain several seconds to process that. Redhead. There was a woman with striking red hair not far off, whom he staggered towards. Her hair was vibrant--it was hard to miss her. "'scuse me... miss..." Xiao made it to within two feet of her, then promptly fell over onto his hands and knees as his legs gave away underneath him. | @xiao | ### | notes People were avoiding her and all Riley could figure was that word had finally gotten around that she didn't play the stupid whining, crying games that a lot of the colonists were playing. She didn't sit there and coo to them when they got burned by the sun, nor did she fuss over them when they weren't feeling well because they ate some strange berry that didn't agree with them. She didn't sit there and act like they were all going to be okay, when the likelihood of them all dying from exposure was high. And she didn't provide medical attention for free. Some of the colonists called her a bitch, but she really didn't care what they thought of her because they were finally leaving her alone. It was pretty nice. "Over there. The redhead."Damnit. Riley turned when she overhear one of the colonists giving directions to someone. She was less than pleased to see someone stumbling toward her, though this one actually seemed to have something wrong with him. She crossed her arms and frowned, but made no move to walk toward him mostly because she was analyzing the way he was moving and acting. Her first guess was heat exhaustion, which was a pretty common occurance since the scorch started. But then he fell to his hands and knees at her feet and she saw his hand. Ew. Her nose wrinkled and she crouched down next to him, her eyes locked on his swollen and obviously painful hand. It was clear that heat exhaustion wasn't the problem and she began to wish that it was because it was so much simpler. "What the hell did you do?" She demanded. "." |

The world spun on its axis as Xiao lowered his head briefly, in an attempt to catch his breath. The air was hot; it burned as it entered his lungs, adding to the uncomfortable heat burning him up from the inside out. He noticed a pair of shoes approaching out of the periphery of his vision but even lifting his head up to look felt like far too much work. I should've been more careful, he thought ruefully. Hindsight was 20/20 but regret was going to be forever if his hand ended up permanently messed up! As the feet stopped by him, he shifted slowly to sit back on his heels and cradled his swollen hand in his lap. It looked worse than it did only a few moments ago, so painfully red that it had taken on the shade that only boiled lobsters achieved. "Plant," he mumbled thickly to the woman's--somewhat angry-sounding--question. "Thorn." @ Riley JonesMADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

| @xiao | ### | notes In the time that Riley had spent as a medic she had never seen skin achieve that particular shade of red without having blisters or welts forming as well. The whole hand actually looked like one giant blister and she wondered how much more it would swell before his skin split and all the nastiness inside of it began to ooze out. If she he was lucky -- and the swelling got to that point -- he would pass out before that happened. Her brows furrowed and her frown deepened when he finally managed to say plant thorn as an explanation to what had happened to his hand. "Didn't your mother ever tell you not to touch strange things on strange planets?" She snorted. Riley reached for the injured man's wrist so she could pull him to his feet and drag him off to her cave where her limited supplies were. "Come on, we have to deal with that before it gets worse." As if it weren't already bad enough. "Sit down." She instructed once they made it back to her cave. She got a fire going, grabbed her medical kit, then made her way back to the injured man. "Give it here." Riley said, motioning for him to hold his hand out to her. She was quiet for a moment as she looked at it, her brows furrowing again. "Alright. Let's cut it off.""." |

Her voice faded in and out to the throb and pulse of blood in his ears and, somewhat dazedly, Xiao allowed his wrist to be pulled up so that she could yank him to his feet. "N--Yes?" His mother warned him about touching strange plants but in his defence, that was back on Earth with Earth plants. (Not that it was a particularly good argument regardless.) Dizzyingly, the world spun again; he uttered a small distressed noise as he realized that they were moving. Some part of him wanted to protest. He didn't know where she was taking him or what she would eventually do to him, and the part of him that always needed to be presented with facts needed a plan of action from her. But before he could rationalize his thoughts into a coherent argument, he found himself sitting in a cave lit by a flickering fire that cast everything into sharp relief. With some difficulty, he extended his hand as instructed. Whether or not she could even see the site of the sting, he didn't know; and in that moment, it was hard to really think about anything except how much it hurt. Xiao tried to focus, on the fire, then on her. By all appearances, she seemed... capable. There was an air of brisk competence about her that was reassuring, although he couldn't be sure if she was a real doctor or if she just watched a lot of medical dramas and happened to come by a med kit. It took a whole half minute for what she said to filter through. "Wh-what?" he asked plaintively and faintly in distress, pulling the hand back and guarding it with his good one in his lap like she might spring on him like a tiger and do it without his permission. "Cut it off? Can't we...?" Xiao looked down at the hand, at the way it was almost unrecognizable and swallowed hard. Lose a finger or let the poison spread? He swallowed again, trying to weigh the decision with a brain that was only running at a fraction of its usual capacity. "O-okay..." He extended the hand again and squeezed his eyes shut tight. @ Riley Jones MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

| @xiao | i figured you could say what came out of his hand, blood, pus, a wild animal xD It came as a bit of a surprise to the medic that her patient didn't protest more at the thought of removing his hand. She had expected more than a Wh-what? CUt it off? Can't we...? as he pulled his hand back, but that was all she got and .... honestly, it was a little bit disappointing. Was it too much to ask for a little bit more of a panic? RIley's gaze had lifted from the injured man's hand to his face when she had declared that she was going to have to remove his hand. He gave in too quickly and held his hand back out to her, which she took in her own and looked down at it, frowning. "You said a plant thorn did this?" She turned his hand over, still examining it. "I don't ..." She'd never seen anything like it and she'd seen her fair shair of acute allergic reactions. To make the situation even better than it was, she didn't have any of the supplies she really wanted or needed because they were still on cargo ships. A sigh slipped past the woman's lips and she released her patient's hand so she could dig through her trauma kit. There was a scalpel she had packed away in it just in case she'd need it and now she was glad that she had because finding a knife and cleaning it would have been annoying. Along with the scalpel she pulled out a few antiseptic wipes, which she used to clean the blade before turning her attention back to her patient. "I'm not going to cut your whole hand off," yet "I think lancing it will be enough." Her head tilted as she studied the swollen hand. For as much as it had swollen she was sure that there was all sorts of nastiness that was brewing in there. She grabbed one of her cloths and put it on her lap, then placed Xiao's hand on it. "It's gonna hurt like a motherfucker." She said, the blade of her scalpel poised above his hand. "Try not to pass out." She looked back down and, without much warning, sliced into his hand. "." |

"Mmhm," Xiao nodded, eyes still shut tight. He didn't want to see it. Whatever she would have to do to it, he didn't want to bear witness. The thought of losing a hand wasn't quite as bad as, say, death, because while he could make do with one hand, dying was rather more... permanent. Besides, in his current state, he deliriously began to agree with her. Yes, obviously the hand needed to go. It was swollen, beyond saving. What else could she do with it? When the chopping didn't happen immediately, however, Xiao cracked open one eye to watch the medic rifling through her pack. Clearly she was searching for a saw--at least, he imagined that that was how the hand had to be amputated. When she turned with a scalpel though, he blinked slowly. "That's..." an awfully puny instrument for taking off a whole limb. But no. She didn't have to amputate? The half-crazed part of his brain under the influence of the ordeal and pain almost started to argue with her. What did she mean she wouldn't cut it off? Was she refusing to save his life?! Then reason filtered down through the layers of fog in his brain and he let out a relieved little laugh. Oh, good. The hand was safe--for now. "Nn... no promises." He managed to crack a wry grin that quickly turned into a howl of pain as the scalpel slid into his hand, releasing what could only be described as a burst of fluid--and a small, thin, wiggling black worm-like organism that flopped to the ground by her feet. Xiao, with his eyes shut so tight that even the tears of pain couldn't leak out, didn't see it, or he might have very well passed out at that point. Instead, he doubled over and let out a garbled string of curses in his native language. "Y-you could've said something beforehand!" he gasped, reflexively jerking the hand away from her lap and into his own, where the rapidly draining interstitial fluid stained his pants. ---- @ Riley Jones | Ouchies. :< MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

| @xiao | ### | notes No promises was something she was pretty accustomed to hearing when she told people not to whine or complain while she treated them. Sometimes she thought that they thought she was joking, but she really did hate to hear whining while she was trying to work. It was distracting and annoying, but this time she was able to use it to her advantage and slice into his hand while he had himself distracted. Riley was expecting the burst of fluid that errupted from his hand and she was expecting him to curse -- at least that's what she assumed the garbled language he was speaking was -- and she expected him to yank his hand back. What she didn't expect was the wriggling black worm-like creature to fall out of his hand. "What the f------?" She cut herself off and scrambled to her feet so she could smash it under her shoe and grind it into the floor of the cave. "Don't be ridiculous." Riley finally snorted in response to his you could have warned me. That was total garbage. "If I had you would have been tense and probably jerked your hand away before I was ready to cut it. It's better this way." She scraped her shoe against the ground and looked to see if there were any other worms before sitting back down. "Give it here." She said, motioning for him to let her see his hand again. She definitely wanted to make sure there weren't any other of those weird worms --parasites? -- wriggling around in his hand and she needed to drain as much of the nastiness out of it as possible.
