PERSONALITY One thing you can certainly say about Colette is that she's talkative. And by that, I mean, TALKATIVE. She's a natural born extrovert, who loves the company of others. For her, a good conversation or a nice evening spent with friends are just as essential as breathing air. She is generally open to everyone for a good laugh or a meaningful conversation. It's easy to approach and very easy to make friends with her, however she keeps her inner thoughts to herself and a small group of close friends.
Col loves a good laugh and she's a master of sarcasm. She also loves to make obscure pop culture references and jokes she knows noone understands besides her. She's a huge fan of popular music, classic films, sci-fi in every form and obscure B-movies and weird arthouse films. She can basically quote all episodes of The Twilight Zone and Star Trek by heart, which she often does to impress or annoy her company (depending on the person).
This ultimately bubblish and easy-going nature is also her negative side, as she can often be careless about things, rushing and not considering them with enough depth. She's very moody, in one moment she's bursting out of joy, the next she's down and depressed. She had her share of boyfriends in the past, although neither of them were a truly very close relationship. She's usually better in getting close to friends than to a loved one. Also, she feels that her 'weirdo' persona is not exactly a magnet for guys (which, of course, is not exactly and always true). Currently she is suffering from the guilt she feels about not telling Greg she loved him (see below), but she's keeping it hidden and only to herself.
Colette is also very curious. She's excited about the world around her, and loves to make new discoveries, which is one of the driving force behind her lust to meet and get to know new people. She also feels a sort of social responsibility. She loves to take care about others (let it be a friend, a random person or even a pet or a plant), which makes her the ideal person for a counselor's job. She loves to listen to people and help their problems, that's why she chose her profession.
Col's main hobby is music, which is sorta her 'other life' besides her counseling studies and work. A talented and trained pianist, she played keyboards in several bands, and can also play the (lefty) guitar and the flute. Back home, she owned a tabby cat named Edgar Ulmer, whom she packed along her trip to the unknown, and is currently waiting for the package to arrive - just like the small portable synthesizer she packed along as well.
HISTORY Colette or Col (as most friends address her... or well, addressed... back on Earth) was born in Montreal, Canada, in a family she usually describes as pretty much dysfunctional. Her father, a pianist, spent most of his time getting drunk, while her mother, a former dancer, was trying to take care of Col and her two younger brothers, while the couple were constantly occupied with throwing things at each other.
Not exactly having an ideal childhood, neverthless Colette was a bright and intelligent kid from early on, who had a natural curiosity towards the world surrounding her. She loved to read and explore the distant worlds of fiction just as much as exploring the outside world, getting lost either in a book or at a nearby park or streetcorner. She also had strong feelings of responsibility from an early age, finding enjoyment in taking care of the small and the weak - let it be her brothers, or a stray cat or even a plant. Following her father's musical footsteps, Col started to learn to play the piano at the age of 5 and eventually turned out to be a talented player.
Colette always felt sort of an outsider as a child, the 'weirdo kid' who talks about weird books or strange sci-fi movies instead of playing with dolls or dressing up as a princess, and this trend continued into her teenage years. In high school, instead of aspiring to be a cheerleader or member of the athletic team, she formed an alternative punk band named The Zanti Misfits, and also spent some of her free time organizing food and clothes distributions to the homeless and the poor. Meanwhile, her parents finally ended up divorcing, and her mom re-marrying to a local bar owner. Col spent some of her free time working at the bar after school. Then, came graduation and the big question of life: what next?
The answer to that question came easily to our young bookworm: college, of course. Accepted with a scholarship to McGill University, Colette received her BA degree in Psychology, then got a chance to study abroad, when she got accepted to a foreign students' scholarship program at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The main reason for moving to Brazil (aside from getting her MA diploma, of course) was to get as far from her family as possible. The two years she spent in South America, were fairly important in her development: she not only encountered a different culture and miriads of new experiences, she also learned how to use her studies in action, volunteering at a hospital as a first-aid medic and doing social work in the slums of Rio.
Getting her MA diploma, Colette moved back to Montreal, settling down in a small flat, and started her PhD studies at McGill, while working as an assistant counselor at a local hospital. In her spare time, she played keyboards in an alternative band called Peggy and the Liptons, usually performing at local clubs (while also working on a solo project named The Girl From The Green Dimension for bandcamp/soundcloud). Col soon befriended Greg Denholm, the band's bass player, and their relationship eventually evolved into a close, soulmate type of friendship. They knew very well that both of them had feelings towards each other beyond just being friends, however neither of them had enough courage to let those feelings known.
Then, news came in about the end of the world, and the population being deployed to some distant planet in the unknown regions of space. When the population got evacuated, Colette and Greg lost track of each other, and she suddenly felt a great regret for never telling him about her true feelings. Col was deployed in a spaceship, heading for the colony, losing track of all her family and friends, even her beloved cat, whom she stuffed in a large item box, not exactly sure if it'd arrive to that planet with her.
So, now Colette is totally clueless. Arriving to the colony, she's wondering why it's exactly her being deployed there along those first group of people whose task is to explore this brave new world and create the foundations of human society there. She's a skilled psychologist, but a total rookie and a skilled medic, but not a surgeon. She tries to do her best in helping out her fellow colonists, if it means healing a wound, fixing a broken leg or checking their mental health, hoping her efforts will do good and be rewarded.
