| The best part of the scorch finally being over was definitely finally being able to go out during the day. Staying in the caves had made Zee feel stir crazy and knowing that she wasn't able to do any exploring during the night had only added to that feeling. But now everything was getting back to normal. The cultivators were planting again, hunters were hunting and trapping, and the watchers were back to their normal routines. All in all, everything seemed to be great.
Zee had left Exurbia that morning and had headed toward Nemus on horseback. She wasn't going out to explore, but just to enjoy some time out in sunlight that was no longer lethal. As she rode she couldn't help but notice that the animals had also come down from the mountains, which made sense seeing as how the hunters were able to do their thing again. She made a mental note that she needed to go out and set a few traps when she got back to Exurbia so she'd could try and catch something instead of batering with the hunters because she didn't have much to trade or rather, nothing that she was willing to part with.
Water splashed up around her legs as she rode across the river and that snapped her out of her daze and back to reality. She hadn't even realized she'd made it to the river until she'd felt the cool water against her legs. In the weeks following the scorch the river had become an even more popular place than it had been before, and now was no different. There were people hanging around, talking and laughing. Zee waved politely to them before continuing on until she found a spot that was empty.
Perfect.
She stopped the horse and dismounted -- standing after riding for so long definitely felt weird, but it wasn't bad. She tied the horse off to a low hanging branch and pulled the saddle and blanket off of its back, because she knew the likelihood that she would be at the river for a while was high. There was no point in making the poor animal stand there with the saddle on its back for hours. She took her boots off and dropped them next to the saddle then headed toward the river.
Zee stopped at the water's edge and looked around once more just to make sure that there was no one else around. When she was sure that she was alone she pulled her shirt off and dropped it in the grass. Her shorts and socks were next. She waded into the water then hesitated and looked around again. Once again, she saw no one, so she pulled off her bra and panties and tossed them next to the rest of her clothes. It had been far too long since the last time she'd been able to go swimming and the cool water felt so good against her skin. It was really relaxing and after being confined to a cave relaxing was definitely a must.
The relaxing came to an abrupt end, however, when she heard what sounded like footsteps. Shit. "Uh..." Zee moved into the deeper water, hoping that it would be enough to keep everything covered. "Is someone out there?"

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"]Jaron had thought the Scorch was lonely. Not like... alone lonely, but the kind of lonely you get when you're surrounded by people who don't give a shit about you. That had been nothing compared to the solitude he'd been forced into since sunlight was no longer fatal. Everyone went back to business as usual, doing their things, laughing and eating together, playing in the river, and being overall so carefree that no one had any use for that measly entertainer that had kept the majority of them from offing themselves during the too-short nights of the Scorch. Granted, Jaron had been quite occupied rebuilding his little cabin considering the roof had burnt off and the walls were now of questionable integrity, but that could only stave off the pit in his stomach for so long. He needed human interaction, and he was so desperate to get it that he was actually on his way to join the masses in the river, fully prepared to put on the face of Leo and pretend everything was okay. Just in case it was weird, though, he brought the little pail he had to gather water in, so he could make a quick break if needed. His hesitation showed in the slowness of his steps, feet nearly scuffing through the dead debris of the forest floor as he made his way northeast, pail haphazardly balanced between his arm and hip. These people weren't his fans, and they sure as hell weren't his friends. But he needed something, dammit - he thrived off the attention. He was not above swimming in his briefs to get- Is someone out there?Steps faltering, Jaron tripped and nearly went down. His heart was racing even before his brain figured out why the voice sounded so familiar, and his beautiful face was saved thanks to his basket breaking his fall. It crumpled under the weight, of course, and Jaron could've cried. It had taken some serious shmoozing to get the girl to teach him how to make it, and about three times as long to actually put it together. Without it, he'd have to walk to the river every day. But nevermind that - more important things at hand. Pushing slowly to his feet, he managed to get into the clearing. Of course the first thing he saw was her, looking glorious in the glistening water, with the sun hitting somehow just right, like it'd been made at her personal spotlight. And then he took in the horse, which startled him into side-stepping, and the pile of clothes next to it that kind of trailed toward the river. Good sweet baby Jesus... was she trying to kill him? She was; she had to be. Swallowing past the lump in his throat, Jaron leaned casually ( Yaveh, please make me look casual) against the tree the horse was tied to, solely so his knees wouldn't buckle... or he let himself walk dumbly down to the water. Composure totally shot, he pulled it together as quickly as he could and crossed his arms over his chest - which was rising and falling much more heavily than it should. "..You're growing your hair out," he observed. | Jesus Christ. It just had to be Jaron that walked up when she was stark naked. She could feel her face starting to flush and she wanted nothing more than to cover herself up, but that would mean getting out of the water to get her clothes. Still, it was nice to see that he had survived the scorch, especially since she hadn't seen him at all since he'd driven all of her possessions up to the mountains. It wasn't that she hadn't wanted to see him, it was just that there was so much to do after Sol had set and moving around during the hottest hours of the day was just unbearable.
"...hey." She said dumbly. Was he, somehow, more attractive than she remembered or was she crazy? She sank down deeper into the water until it was nearly touching her nose and watched as he leaned against the tree she'd tied the horse to. Jesus, she wished that he would look away, but at the same time she kind of liked the attention. She glanced at her clothes then back to Jaron when he mentioned her hair, which was curious. In her experience men never really noticed something like that.
She lifted herself up so she could answer. "Yeah." It was kind of hard for her to keep her hair short when no one had thought to bring scissors with them. It wasn't a big deal, though, because she had liked her hair long anyway. "Do you like it?" Her head tilted and she tried to tell herself that it didn't matter whether or not Jaron liked her hair, but no matter how much she tried to convince herself she still hoped that he did.
Zee bit her lip and looked at her clothes again, silently cursing herself for taking everything off because she knew better. There were too many people going to the river to gather water and swim, but she'd been so confident that there was no one else around. "It's really good to see you." She pressed on in an effort to ignore how awkward she felt. "I missed you during the scorch... I was hoping that you made it through okay."

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] You're growing your hair out.REALLY?! After one hellacious season of not seeing each other, that's what you say to her? You are such a pussy. This is an invite if you've ever seen one...But it wasn't, and he knew it. She hadn't meant to be here, just like he hadn't meant to find her. Their paths crossing was total coincidence, as it always was, and he respected her way too much to pretend he thought otherwise. So he kept his distance, like the nice guy would.. even though he wasn't a nice guy. Besides, the way she sunk into the water screamed self-conscious, even though she had zero reason to be. "Of course I like it," he answered automatically, and it took his brain a second to realize he'd said it out loud rather than mumbling it to himself as intended. Not one to become easily embarrassed, Jaron clenched his jaw rather than looking at his feet. That, of course, gave him the opportunity to see where Zee's eyes landed - on her clothes. "Do you want-.." he started, but was swiftly cut off when she blurted out the words he'd been trying so hard to keep to himself. Slouching against the tree, he audibly groaned. Pushing a hand through his hair - which was, for once, not totally drenched in sweat - he managed to say, "..I missed you too," through a tight throat. At that, his gaze did fall to the ground, but only for a second. He'd mentally prepared himself for the day he saw her again - or so he thought. He needed to latch on to some of the things he'd told himself he'd be able to do... and able to resist. Clearing his throat, he finished his earlier sentence: "Do you want me to toss your clothes to you? I can turn around, or-.." OR NOTHING. Yaveh, he was a miserable excuse for a man. What was he expecting her to say? "No, it's okay, come swim with me while I'm naked"? Fat chance in hell. Not that he'd even take her up on it if she did, because he was stronger than her innocent wiles. The last thing Zee should have been worried about was whether or not Jaron liked her hair. It was silly and something that giggling high school girls worried about. That sort of thing should have been cast aside and totally forgotten about in favor of figuring out she was going to keep survivng on a planet that seemed hell bent on killing everything on it. Still, when Jaron said that he liked her hair she felt like she had butterflies fluttering around in her stomach and she couldn't fight back her smile. "Thanks." she murmured
Hearing Jaron say that he missed her too made her raise her eyebrows in surprise. "You did?" She asked. "I thought I was annoying." Because she certainly remembered a time when he'd asked her if anyone had ever told her she was annoying. That time seemed like it was forever ago.
Do you want me to toss your clothes to you? I can turn around or-..
Or what? Zee almost asked, but she bit her lip before the words could fliy out. There was no doubt that it would make their current situation more awkward than it already was. "Uhm..." Well, yeah she definitely wanted her clothes. "Yeah, please." She waited for Jaron to toss her clothes to her and turn around. "No peeking." She warned, then waited a little bit just to be sure that he would keep his back turned before she finally got out of the water.
Zee dressed quickly, partly because she didn't want to be naked if anyone else happened to stumble upon her and partly because she was completely self conscious about Jaron sneaking a peek -- after all, she had when he'd been naked. Her face flushed and she hurriedly buttoned her shorts and pulled on her shirt. She sighed and finally walked over to where Jaron was waiting with his back turned and reached up to tap him on the shoulder. "All done." She said and she spread her arms out and smiled. "You can give me a hug now."

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] "You're welcome," he said, much more clearly than her little mumble. He kept his eyes on hers, but it didn't look like her gaze was directed his way. When she called him out on his previous... opinions, Jaron snorted and waved a hand in front of him as if she'd just said the silliest thing he'd ever heard. "Only most of the time," he teased, absolutely not meaning it. Really, he was just trying to make light of the nearly tangible sexual tension between them. Or maybe that was just on his end, but it was definitely there. Sadly Thankfully, she requested her clothes, and he hopped into motion to toss them her way. His was going to be seriously messed up over having her bra in his hand, but he turned around as soon as the garments were on the ground so she couldn't see the way he flushed. "I would dream of it," he said defensively, hands up as she scorned him. She'd probably catch the mistake he made in the common saying, but that's okay - it was intentional. The muscles in his back tensed before she tapped his shoulder, because every cell of his body knew she was there. And here he'd though that the time apart would dull his reactions to her. Turning back to her, he immediately wrapped his arms under hers, with every intention of standing straight and lifting her off the ground in a big goofy hug. Instead, his body betrayed him by remaining hunched and leaning back against the tree, forcing his face into the crook of her neck. Thankfully she smelled more like the river than her, but he still relaxed like the person who had a long day at work and just returned home. He didn't know how long he stayed like that, but a sudden grunt from her horse had him coming back to reality and releasing her. "I see the Scorch was nice to you," he pointed out, thrusting his thumb at the animal specifically so he'd let go of her.... with that arm. The other was still around the small of her back, though he applied no pressure there. It felt natural, so he didn't even realize it. | "I wouldn't dream of it." Zee said, because that was what the saying was supposed to be .... unless he meant that he would dream of watching her get dressed. But that was just weird and thinking about it that way made her blush fiercely, so she shoved the thought away.
When Jaron turned around and actually hugged her she was nothing short of surprised. The only thing she had expected from him was for him to wave her away and tell her not to be stupid. So when she felt his arms wrap around her she froze for a split second -- though it felt like much longer -- before she wrapped her arms around his neck. His face in the crook of her neck, the way his arms felt wrapped around her, and the way he seemed to relax gave the butterflies in her stomach new life. But it was wonderful and it felt so right, which ... it shouldn't have because they were supposed to be just friends. It still didn't stop her from turning her head and kissing him on the cheek when he finally let go of her and pulled away.
Thankfully he mentioned the horse and Zee was able to focuse on that. "Yeah. I got him when the scorch first started. It was hell trying to keep him confined to a cave. Y'know. So the sun wouldn't roast him alive." It was difficult to not lean against Jaron as he stood there with her, and when that temptation got to be a little too much she finally stepped toward the horse and patted it's neck. "But he's a good horse."
It was like a lightbulb went off in her head and she turned to look at Jaron. "Have you ever ridden before?" She asked, and as she did she moved to untie the reins from the branch because she'd already made her mind up that Jaron was going to go horseback riding. "Give me a leg up?" She held a fistful of the horse's mane and when Jaron finally boosted her up she pulled herself the rest of the way onto its back and made herself comfortable. It had been a long time since she'd ridden without a saddle, but there was no way the two of them could ride comfortably if she put the saddle back on the horse's back. "Come on." She held her hand out to help him up.

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] "Is that not what I said?" he countered, smiling crookedly to show he was bluffing. It was a good thing he was a little too distracted by being relaxed to notice the way the skin of her neck twisted, indicating she turned her head - because if he had, he might've pulled back just enough that they made a much different contact. Instead, he stayed still and the feathering of her lips on his cheek surprisingly didn't strike him as a lost opportunity. Being with Zee was like being somewhere he knew like the back of his hand and could navigate blindfolded.. comfortable; the kind of place you didn't have a worry in the world. All moments had an end, though, and he decided to choose when this one came to a conclusion rather than waiting for her to realize they were being a little too friendly and balked. Chuckling, he eyed the horse. "I bet," he agreed, trying to imagine a flighty animal liking being confined anywhere that had the sounds echo like crazy, meaning it would be impossible to tell which direction a predator was coming from until it was on top of the prey. She slid from his grip a little too easily, but she distracted him quickly enough that he didn't have time to psychoanalyze himself. "Uh... no," he admitted, concentrating on leaning against the tree so he wouldn't shift his weight and give away his uncertainty. Especially after she asked him to hoist her up, because that told him they were going to be in very close quarters for a little while. Smirking, he had Zee instruct him of how to hold his hands to help her up, then backed up a step with a nervous laugh as the horse pranced a little. "Do I, uh... get on in front of you or behind you?" he asked, only taking her hand after he had the instruction. The hop-step he took before actually jumping up was probably unnecessary, and may have been why he face-planted into Zee's nape, but whatever. A little too embarrassed to do much of anything else, Jaron righted himself and slid closer, so he was straddling her with both his legs and arms. "You better make this thing move really damn slow," he warned, hunching over so his chin rested on her shoulder. "Behind." Zee answered quickly enough when Jaron asked where he should sit. "If you sit in front of me I won't be able to see where we're going." Which would be a big problem, since Jaron hadn't ever ridden a horse before. The horse shifted its weight as Jaron jumped up onto its back, but Zee was able to hold him still and keep him from walking before Jaron was ready. The last thing she wanted was for him to slip and fall off before their little trail ride had even begun. She didn't know if Jaron was the type to get right back in the saddle, so to speak, if he fell off and she didn't really want to find out.
Zee was pretty thankful that Jaron was sitting where he couldn't really see her face, or more importantly, the way she blushed when he scooted closer to her. She could feel his chest against her back and then his chin was resting on her shoulder. "Are you scared?" She asked, turning her head only a fraction because she was positive she was still blushing and she didn't want to draw Jaron's attention to it. "Y'know, you can hold onto me if you're scared." Like she would complain about having Jaron's arms wrapped around her for however long he let the trail ride last.
Once she was sure Jaron was ready she clicked to the horse and nudged its sides gently with the heels of her boots. The animal started forward slowly and Zee guided it away from the river. "Slow enough?" If Jaron was anything like some of the first time horseback riders she'd worked with at the stable he was probably silently freaking out and hoping for the ride to end soon. But she could also be wrong and he could a natural an love everything about horseback riding.
"Oh." She shifted so she could turn to look back at Jaron. "Try not to kick him, or nudge him with your feet. He'll start moving faster." And you might fall off. She turned back around an guided the horse toward the forest, because there were trails cut through the woods by the native animals that were big enough for a horse to fit through. Once they were on a trail and the horse seemed to be following it of its own accord she leaned back against Jaron's chest. "What do you think so far? It's not bad, right?"

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] "Oh.. right," he chuckled to himself, feeling dumb for not thinking that through. "No," he insisted, though the lapse of silence afterward said he was lying. "I just.. wanted to cuddle," he tried, though that just made things worse. He pulled back a little so she wouldn't be able to see the color rushing to his cheeks. Good Yaveh, he needed to stop acting like a little schoolboy tiptoeing around his crush. This was embarrassing. Holding onto her sounded like a good idea though, so very slowly, he shifted his arms to hang lightly around her midsection. Bad idea. When they started moving, he closed his eyes to take a moment and soak in the situation. With the sun soaking through his eyelids the way it was, he began daydreaming of a different scenario entirely - one where he and Zee were resting comfortably at the edge of his bed, breeze blowing softly through the window and tickling his face with her hair. He was wrapped around her like he was now, but there was more of her to enfold. Jaron didn't realize what it was his brain was conjuring up until the phantom sensation of a tiny foot kicking his hand had him abruptly pulling back, severing the reverie and nearly toppling off the horse. His breathing was rapid, eyes wide as he stared at Zee's back and swallowed thickly. What in the name of everything holy is going on with me?!It was only then that he realized she'd been talking to him, and he'd been so lost in himself that he hadn't heard her. Had he fallen asleep? "It's, uh... nice, yeah," he stammered out, feeling the need to run. He was lucky the horse hadn't bolted when he'd backed off, though; he wasn't going to push it. "Mind if we head back to my place? I don't feel so well," he said truthfully, the pallor of his face making it obvious. Was he going through withdrawal again? He hadn't had anything in nearly six months! But what else could cause a hallucination like that? He never wanted to have one again! "Oh..." Was all Zee could think to say in response to Jaron's comment about cuddling. She was, again, thankful that he was sitting behind her because he couldn't see the bright red blush that colored her face. She stared ahead, trying to concentrate on anything and not Jaron's arms around her waist, and how good, or right, or perfect it felt. She was sure that if he knew what she was thinking that he would have thought twice about going horseback riding with her, which honestly probably would have been for the best because it made things far less complicated emotionally.
Thankfully once they started moving and got on a trail it gave her something else to concentrate on besides Jaron's closer than normal presence. She even got comfortable and was able to settle herself against him while they rode through the forest. At least she was until he suddenly jumped and pulled himself away from her. Zee quickly sat up straight and stopped the horse before turning as much as she could to look at Jaron. "Are you okay?" she asked, totally baffled as to what had happened. If he had started to fall she would have felt it since she was leaning against him. And they weren't moving any faster than they had when they'd left the river.
Zee started to frown when Jaron asked if they could go back to his place, but then she quickly hid it. "Yeah." She said and she turned back around. She nudged the horse's side with her heels and directed him toward Jaron's home. She tried her hardest not to be disappointed that their time together was cut short because he wasn't feeling well, but she couldn't help it. It was definitely disappointing, especially after not seeing him at all during the Scorch and wondering if he'd even made it through alive and in one piece.
It didn't take them terribly long to reach Jaron's cabin and when they did she let Jaron get down before she followed suit. "Are you gonna be okay?" She asked, concerned. If he wasn't feeling well she definitely thought he should see a medic even if there wasn't much they could do. "You aren't gonna go lay down in there and die, are you?"

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] "Y-yeah," he croaked, a little nauseous. A hand subconsciously went to his chest to rub away the ache, and he grimaced. Something was seriously wrong with him, but it-.. His eyes lifted to Zee. It never happened unless he was around her. Lids slitting, he looked at her a long second, pallor still evident. His delusions weren't about random trippy things like they used to be when he was going through withdrawal; they all centered around the woman sitting in front of him, looking at him with genuine concern. She cared for him, he cared for her - yet for some reason they insisted on remaining platonic. Correction - she insisted on remaining platonic. Thankfully, she turned back around and nudged the horse before Jaron could make a fool of himself and start talking about such things. Not like he really wanted to talk about it - his hallucination was unsettling enough. Instead of scooching back up to her, Jaron remained that short distance away, leaned forward with his hands flat on the horse's back, brain tumbling over itself as he tried to figure out what the shit he was going to do. He thought their time apart would have been therapeutic, but apparently it was precisely the opposite. And he was really, really tired of being the broken record about how much he yearned for but could not have her. It gave him a headache, and to be perfectly honest frustrated him so much he felt like crying. Because that's what a person did when they saw no way out except the way they didn't want to go - they broke down. Apparently he'd delved deeper into his own head than he thought, because it took Zee's urging for him to realize they were back to his cabin. Eyes a little glazed over, he sloppily dismounted, wavering between diving inside without even saying goodbye and hanging around to torment himself more. But then a thought occurred to him, and his eyes slid between his shoddy little home and the girl who had somehow tamed him. "That... depends," he started, eyes focusing on something distant before locking on her face, "on whether or not you're coming in."[attr="class","cred"]MADE BY VEL OF WW + GS[googlefont=Oswald][newclass=.sinmain2]width:380px;background-color:#fcfcfc;padding:60px;border:solid 1px #ddd;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinlyrics]font-family:georgia;font-size:26px;color:#9a2a29;text-transform:uppercase;letter-spacing:3px;margin-top:10px;text-align:center;[/newclass][newclass=.sinlyrics2]font-family:Oswald;font-size:38px;font-weight:400;color:#333;text-transform:uppercase;margin-top:-25px;text-align:center;[/newclass][newclass=.sintag2]padding:10px 20px 0px 10px;font-family:verdana;font-size:9px;letter-spacing:1px;color:#666;text-align:center;[/newclass][newclass=.sin2]background-color:#fcfcfc;[/newclass] [newclass=.sinbody2]margin-top: 5px;width: 370px; text-align: justify; font-family: verdana; font-size: 10px; line-height: 15px;color:#333;[/newclass][newclass=.cred]text-align:center;font-size:6pt;color:rgb(132, 132, 132);letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;margin-top:5px;[/newclass][newclass=.cred a]color:rgb(132, 132, 132);font-size:6pt;letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;[/newclass]

Even though he said that he was okay Zee didn't believe him. His voice didn't sound quite right and the distance that he'd put between them, even if it was just a couple of inches, seemed like much farther. And the way that he'd suddenly jerked away from her as if he'd been bitten or stung screamed that that something wasn't quite right. Even though she wanted to ask what was wrong and what had happened she kept herself from doing so, because se knew Jaron well enough to know that he would likely pretend that everything was fine and make an excuse.
Honestly, Zee was a little bit disappointed that he'd wanted to go back home so quickly. After being locked up in caves and not seeing each other for weeks -- or was ait months? It was hard to keep time on PE-- she would have thought that they would have at least had a little more time to talk and catch up. A little bit of small talk and social interaction never really hurt ayone too badly, did it?
When he dismounted he seemed, at least to Zee, to be a little bit unsteady which was why she dismounted as well. Her head tilted as she watched him, trying to figure out what was wrong with him. He seemed ... a little jumpy, maybe? Tense? Distant? His eyes definitely looked a little troubled and then Zee remembered the day they had first met when he'd been going through withdrawals and her eyes widened a fraction.
But no. He would have had to have brought drugs with him. Or found someone with some. And there was just no way that he could have gotten something there, not with how all of their stuff had been checked.
Zee stared at Jaron when he finally spoke and she fiddled with the reins in her hands. It depended on if she went inside or not? Her first thought was that maybe he was going to try and kill himself -- why else would he say that after she asked if he was going to lay down and die -- but she didn't totally believe that. She alsso didn't believe that he was okay and it didn't feel right just leaving him there when she knew something wasn't right. She bit her lip and looked for a place to tie her horse up so it wouldn't wander away while she was inside.
There were plenty of places to tie a horse up, though, thanks to the trees. She picked out a place and tied the horse off before walking back to Jaron. "You're so pale." She finally said and she reached up to touch the backs of her fingers against his cheek. He didn't feel like he had a fever and that made Zee's brows furrow. "You should go lay down."

[attr="class","sinmain2"] [attr="class","sinlyrics"]we've become echoes [attr="class","sinlyrics2"]but echoes fade away [attr="class","sinbody2"] "..Why are you staring at me," he chuckled lightly, signature half-grin brightening his face. His color was returning, ever so slowly, since he made a decision. And when she approached him, his expression softened rather that doing what it normally did - tightening and/or flushing. He didn't answer her suggestion, because he didn't trust himself to. Instead, his hand came up to gently grasp the one she had at his cheek, and he turned to lead her inside. His stride was easy as he made his way to the little makeshift cot, and he folded down onto it, releasing Zee's hand as he went. Last time they'd been here they'd ending up cuddling coincidentally - this time he wasn't going to be so ashamed about it. Curling onto his side, he looked up at her with something just shy of a sheepish grin and patted the area in front of him. "C'mon, nap time," he prodded, and waited. When she hesitated, he rolled his eyes, reached for her arm, and yanked her down. Not the most gentlemanly gesture, but they knew each other long enough that at least he didn't think it was weird. Nuzzling into the back of her neck, her wet hair made his forehead feel cold. Exhaling a long breath warmed it up. "There we go, nice and cozy," he chuckled, and closed his eyes, body relaxed as he loosely draped an arm over her middle. He worked on sleeping, but his brain was swimming in too many directions for that to be accomplished very easily. Or really, swimming so quickly in one particular direction that he was very wide awake. He hadn't even intended to sleep, he just needed her inside the cabin. How he got from that little trickle of a plan to this... Well, it... Okay, he was stalling. His grin alone could make Zee feel weak in the knees and it took every ounce of energy she had to keep herself standing. "I don't believe you!" She blurted out, both to answer his question and to distract herself. Almost immediately after her eyes widened and she looked like a deer caught in headlights because he could take what she said one of two ways. Like I can't believe you're flirting! Or I don't believe you're sick! She played it off -- quite effectively she liked to think -- by checking to see if he had fever and suggesting that he go lay down.
And then her heart lodged itself in her throat.
She really shouldn't feel the butterflies in her stomach and her heart shouldn't start racing just because Jaron held her hand. It wasn't something that happened with friends and she'd tried so hard to keep him in the friend zone where it was safe. And yet there he was leading her into his cabin and she was following obediently even when she knew that she shouldn't. There were excuses that she could give about why she needed to go -- she'd left her tack on the side of the river, she really should be out doing her job exploring -- but she couldn't make herself speak up even when she the realization that he was leading her to his bed smacked her square in the face.
He let go of her hand and settled himself onto the cot, but she just stood there. When he patted the open area in front of him and said it was time for a nap she hesitated. "...what....?" Jaron, of course, didn't give her a chance to finish her question. She gasped when he yanked her down, but whatever protest she had died when he nuzzled the back of her neck. It sent a shiver down her spine that was impossible for her to repress.
But laying there with Jaron was comfortable, but with her heart racing a mile a minute and hundreds of different thoughts and questions bouncing around in her brain there was no way that she could sleep. She wondered if he felt the same way and, without truly thinking about what she was doing, she turned so that she was laying facing Jaron instead of facing away from him.
What are you doing? She wanted to ask. What's your game? Why are you doing this time me? But, again, words failed her and she laid there studying his face -- those beautiful eyes, that grin that made her knees weak and her heart race -- and she couldn't help herself. She shifted closer, her head tilted, and her lips brushed against his in a very shy, hesitant kiss. She just hoped to God that she was doing the right thing.
