w eeks had passed since daario’s initial arrival on petra exterior. upon first touch down, the scorch was ever present; he hated it. the sun decimated everything in its path, forcing the group to hide within the mountains. although he loved mountains, he wanted to love them by choice, not necessity. he loathed the idea of being cornered. daario spent most of his time trying to organize people in an attempt to establish a hierarchy. some took to the structure well, others did not. daario was forced to defend himself against a rag-tag nomad punk tried to fight him. key word: tried. he didn’t come out unscathed, boasting a nasty bruise on his jaw and a slightly swollen ear. the guy brought a crow bar to a gun fight. well technically speaking, daario didn’t have ACTUAL guns, unless you count his arms. (flex) but even he could tell that he would have little to no use in the mountains. he talked to people and gathered knowledge of the surrounding areas, paying particular attention to the west. exurbia would be a good place to start looking for food and maybe establishing an independent group. the SECOND the scorch dissipated, daario took off. it was still hot - the planet was adjusting back to normal temperatures, but not unbearable. after a few hours of solo travel, he arrived at his destination: the river. he gulped down as much as he could handle, a little weary after his journey. daario took note of his surroundings. the earth was still pretty barren, but tiny green buds were already poking through the soil. he smirked at their tenacity. life always found a way. his smirk faded into concern when he heard an ear splitting screech to his right. like something out of a horror movie, a giant bat-bird-worm-freakingthing swooped, casting its giant shadow over him. clearly, daario was about to be lunch. he heard about these creatures. fearsome and predatory, the vesper was not a creature to be trifled with. It didn't have eyes, so he assumed it tracked with echolocation or scent. acting fast, he jumped in the river. luckily he had come up to a bend, so the current was slow and water was only about waist deep. he hoped there weren't any unknown monsters in the river either, or he was really screwed. he looked around, trying to find an escape route so he could figure out what to do next, when he saw a girl. he wasn't sure what she was doing out here, and hadn't seen anyone else for hours, so he assumed she was alone. "hey you!" he bellowed, waving his hands. the vesper swooped, and daario ducked under water then waded deeper. "there's a vesper! get in the water, now!" he had no idea who this girl was, but immediately felt responsible for her well being. first outing, and this happens? he growled in anger as the vesper circled around them.

As soon as Zee knew that it was safe to leave the mountains she did because she honestly couldn't take another minute sitting in the caves. They were nice and all, considering that they had been every colonist's saving grace, but ... they weren't really home. Home was the little shack in Exurbia that she'd had that had been burnt to a crisp by the scorch. But anyway, she loaded all of her stuff up that Jaron had taken to the mountains for her and walked her horse back to Exurbia. The trip was long and it was still pretty hot out, so when she finally reached her destination she unloaded all of her stuff from her horse. Thankfully she knew one of the cultivators, so she was able to leave her horse in his care while she walked to the river.
Everything seemed perfectly normal as she walked back toward the river. There were some strange looking rabbit like animals running around, a breeze was blowing, and everything seemed quiet. It definitely didn't strike Zee as the 'calm before the storm' until she made it to the river and immediately wished that she had stayed in Exurbia.
Daario's shout and the vesper circling overhead had her running for the river, though she wasn't sure that it would be protection enough. If it really wanted it could swoop down and just pluck them right out of the water, couldn't it? Even if they were under the water it could do the same because birds on Earth had done it. Damn, she wished she would have brought her rifle with her because then they could just shoot the damn thing and be done with it.
Zee waded through the water toward Daario, and the closer the got the more she couldn't help but notice just how huge he was. She was pretty sure that his biceps were bigger than her whole body. The vesper swooped down and she ducked under the water, its talons skimming the surface of the water right above her head. When she resurfaced she looked for the vesper, which was still circling overhead, then looked at the man that had yelled at her to get in the water. "It's going to keep us here until it kills us." Which meant that they needed to kill it first. She sighed as she watched the vesper circle.

d aario unsheathed his dagger, weighing it in his hand. it was small, yeah, but it's not like the shuttle would let him take a sword to a new planet. he'd have to make do with what he had now. a tiny weapon, and a girl he just met. speaking of, was she looking at his biceps? he grinned to himself and rolled his shoulders. daario eyed the beast that screamed above them. "how do we get rid of this thing then?" pointing his knife upwards. being waist deep in this water was already getting on his nerves. daario felt his anger flare, no way he was about to be some ugly chickens lunch. he turned back to the girl, poking at her arm. "how's your throwing arm?" he asked, letting his free hand skim the river bottom. lucky for them, he was able to find a few palm sized rocks. the vesper was still sizing them up, but there wasn't much time left before it came back for blood. "piss him off, he'll fly down, you go under, i'll kill him, and we're good. unless you have a better plan?" he kinda hoped she had a better plan. he hadn't been here long enough to learn about the creatures of this planet, and he'd be damned to get eaten on his first meeting with one. he knew that people spoke of a main weakness, but for the life of him he just couldnt remember. daario opened up his palm and offered the rocks, counting the seconds as the vesper flew back towards them. his mind whirled as he tried to anticipate the vespers every move. everything was in slow motion. his heartbeat, breath, and the bat chicken, until something tickled his leg. at first, he thought it was this chick trying to cop a feel. but since they weren't on a first name basis, he then assumed it was probably a fish just swimming by. a fish? hmm

Zee raised an eyebrow when the muscle man asked how they could get rid of the vesper. "I don't know. I've never actually seen one alive before." Really, she'd only seen them once before and it had fallen out of the sky, dead, at her and Logan's feet. "You could be a hero and let it eat you and let me escape." She was only joking ... kind of. But she really didn't have any idea about what they could possibly do and they wouldn't be able to stay in the river dodging the thing forever.
How was her throwing arm? "Okay, I guess." She said hesitantly. "That's a weird question considering there's a vesper trying to kill us." But then he explained his plan and it made perfect sense.... even if it was a little reckless and dangerous. Who wanted a vesper to swoop down on them with the intent to kill? "Okay." Zee said, eyeing the dagger that he had in one hand. "You're going to kill it with that?" It definitely looked like too small of a knife for a vesper, but then again Zee wasn't an expert on killing things.
Zee looked at the pebbles in the palm of Daario's hand before looking him square in the eye. "This is crazy." She muttered. "Oh!" In her surprise she'd totally forgotten about having a much bigger weapon than Daario's little dagger strapped to her hip. She went for it, her fingers unsnapping the sheath that she kept the machete tucked in. "Use this." She said as she scooped the pebbles from his palm and placed the machete in his, now empty, palm.
"Ready." She glanced at Daario, then looked up at the Vesper before hurling the pebbles at it. The loud screech was more than enough to let the two of them know that she'd hit it and it was angry.

d aario's expression flattened when she suggested that he let the beast eat him. he WAS going to be the hero but damn sure wasn't going to be a martyr. he couldn't tell if she was being serious or was an expert in the field of sarcasm. he decided on the latter. daario frowned when the girl asked if he was going to kill it with that? was she trying to give him frown wrinkles? yes he was! leave his baby dagger alone. daario was a MAN so that meant he needed to be in charge of the situation and do that manly thing, which in this case was killing. how dare she question his ability to stab! masculinity momentarily wounded, he snorted and forcefully waved it in the air, grinning at the whistle it gave off. see? if he was smart with it, he'd be able to cut the vesper in little pieces. when she unsheathed the machete from her hip and handed it to him, daario wanted to kick himself in the shin. how embarrassing. how could this girl have a bigger weapon than him! "thanks," he replied, taking the machete gently from her hands. he shoved his own knife into his pocket, disappointed in it. daario weighed the machete, pleased with how balanced it was. he could definitely use one of these. if this chick would just be like, his sidekick and hand him weapons all the time he'd be pretty content. something to consider, eh? she was really cute so he couldn't complain. ready. she sounded pretty confident, good sign. daario flinched when she threw the rock and it clocked the vesper right on its ugly head. "really? you had to go for the head?" daario couldn't help but laugh, widening his stance as the screeching beast plummeted towards them. instinctively, his free hand swiped towards the girl to push her behind him. benefit of being a giant, be a shield wall. though in this case, it might not be a benefit. he didn't want blood on his hands. well yes he did, but not hers. wait....wait... daario's muscles tensed for the perfect moment to strike. when the vesper was nearly upon them, he thrust the machete upwards with a fierce roar. he felt the flesh part - was that weird?- and even in that one moment, could feel the muscles and organs of the beast fighting the blade. he'd have to do more than that to end its life. daario ripped the machete sideways, leaving a gaping hole in the vespers belly. hot sticky blood bathed them both - stench of iron and sweat (he hoped, if were being real it was probably stomach acid from the vesper) mixed together creating a vomit-inducing aroma. the bat chicken reared, screaming, and crash landed on the river bank. it wasn't dead, but mortally wounded and would succumb to its injury in time. daarios senses were still on high alert - but the initial adrenaline was already fading. he felt a dull tickle on his right shoulder. he reached over to scratch it, wincing as a sharp pain shot through his arm. "oh shit," he laughed, craning his neck awkwardly to get a better look. the wound was deep, jagged and uneven chunk missing out of his shoulder- but luckily not fatal. "bastard must have clipped me," daario grunted, splashing water on himself. "are you okay?" concern laden through the strain in his voice. "we should finish it off," he continued, handing her the machete back. of course, by "we" he meant "she"
