Xiao stirred out of slumber, drawing his frozen toes under the thin blanket as the faint but insistent cry of a child echoed hollowly through the caves and tunnels. Normally a light sleeper, it didn't take him long to come fully awake. He arched his back languidly as he stretched slightly and tried to cling on to the last vestiges of that floating feeling of half-consciousness, but the noise persisted. Slowly, Xiao turned his head to look at the figure sleeping beside him. It was a wonder Jamie hadn't woken yet; normally his sleep was lighter than even Xiao's, marked by restlessness and bad dreams. His expression softened as he reached over and tugged the blanket up higher around Jamie's shoulders to ward off the chill and cautiously eased himself off of the thin pallet that they used for a bed--better not wake him. For a few more moments, Xiao looked down at him. A small frown of concentration creased his brows as his fingertips ghosted over the outline of Jamie's jaw, stroking with a feather-light touch. Jamie looked so peaceful in repose; he looked younger, more like the man that Xiao knew before everything was shot to hell. These days, smiles and laughter were few and far in between. It felt like they argued more than ever, strained by the hardships of survival, and Xiao couldn't help but wonder if Jamie needed something more--more than what they had, more than what Xiao could offer. With a low sigh, he withdrew his hand and stood up, shuffling quietly over to the small pile of neatly folded clothes in the corner. Slipping on his jacket and pulling the hood up over his head, he made his way out of their cave. In here it was impossible to tell the time, whether the sun had set or whether it was still up. He walked out to the mouth of the tunnel leading out and saw Sol just beginning to descend, casting parts of the landscape in fading light. The heat radiated so fiercely that Xiao was forced to step back, into the cooler recesses of their communal hiding space. But it was still beautiful, watching the sunset. The cries of the child faded, replaced by silence. Xiao sat with his back to the wall, knees pulled up to his chest. He rested his chin on his knees and sighed, thinking of WeiWei, how she used to cry at night and how nobody could stop her--except Xiao. He used to climb into her crib and curl up beside her and for some reason, his presence kept her calm. Their parents would find them holding hands, fast asleep together. How he missed her. Xiao blinked rapidly for a few moments to get rid of the ache and sting behind his eyes. He swallowed past the lump in his throat as the sun disappeared below the horizon, blanketing the planet in darkness. @ Jamie Clark MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

Jamie's therapist had once told him about the gratitude and how acknowledging life's blessings and appreciating what you had, was a proven step to combat depression. Her advice had been to start the morning with finding three things to be grateful about, not an easy task when you were flying a plane that killed men, sometimes civilians that had a one sentence mention in mission reports that focused on praising how many ISIL communication towers, artillery systems, and tactical units were destroyed. Still, Jamie took the assignment as seriously as he did tasks allotted by the higher ranks, and it turned into a habit that stuck.
Jamie woke up quickly, another habit that he still had from the past life - he could get out of bed and ready in the record time, be in his plane and taking off in a few minutes. There were no snooze buttons and drifting back to sleep at warzone. He opened his eyes and blinked the sleep away, taking a conscious breath and focusing his mind on surroundings. Just from waking up Jamie's heart was already beating too fast in his throat, a rapid fluttering that was like a whip to his brain to go fight or flight mode as his palms gripped the blanket tightly, and he tried to calm himself down. He was fine, he was safe. There were noises of people moving around, water running somewhere, a baby crying, nothing out of order, nothing to worry about, no need to panic. He was still on PE, still in the mountains, still trying to survive. He was fine, he was safe.
"Fuck," Jamie grumbled in the rolled up jacket that was his makeshift pillow, as his heartbeat slowed down and the black hole of fear in his chest dissolved. "No nightmares tonight, I am still alive, I have not killed anyone on PE," Jamie counted his gratitudes while getting dressed, shivering from the coldness that seemed to have found a permanent place in his bones despite the deadly sweltering weather. He opted for running gear over his flight suit that was still damp and drying after a well-deserved wash and laced his shoes with stiff fingers.
Only when he was standing up and fixing the t-shirt in place, Jamie realized that Xiao was not here and that cognizance sat uncomfortably in Jamies’ stomach. They didn't always sleep in the same bed or same place, both liked to wander around and Xiao had lived in Nemus before the Scorch, so there weren't any patterns to get used to, but they had gone to sleep together that day. Jamie sighed and rubbed his eyes, lost for a moment. Times like these he missed phones and walkie-talkies, some way to communicate and locate people around him. Times like these he missed how easy things were with Dot. But it was unfair to compare Xiao to her and thinking about Dot was a road not to follow.
Quietly, not to wake up those who were still sleeping, Jamie walked towards the exit of their shelter, avoiding to step on small stones to supress the noise of his steps, opting for sand and dirt that always found its way inside. He smiled when his eyes fell on Xiao, apparently it was still too hot outside or else, Jamie had no doubt, Xiao would already somewhere, trying to find trouble.
"Here you are," Jamie whispered, loud enough for Xiao to hear him approach and quiet enough to be desecreet. He sat down, his shoulder touching Xiao's in greeting and looked outside where the Sol had disappeared, bringing another night of adventures. He missed the sun, missed being able to walk around in daylight and enjoy the warmness, he missed Florida's beaches and swimming in the ocean, he missed ice cream and ice tea, but it was pointless to dwell on things he missed. There was no way back.
Xiao's eyes shined with the last rays of sun disappearing and Jamies throat got tight, there was a feeling pounding inside him, telling him something was not right. "Are you okay?"

It was true--had the sun already set by the time he got up, Xiao would have already been outside rooting about in the dirt for new things to discover. That was one of the perks of landing on an entirely new, foreign planet, that there was never a shortage of things to learn. It was a good way for him to keep busy, too, and to stop himself from dwelling on the horrors of being light years away from the planet on which he was born. The realization of that--the sheer magnitude of it--often left him reeling. But plants that managed to beat the vicious heat of the sun weren't exactly on his mind, as his thoughts floated away on the strength of the memories of his family, and of a happier past life. He was so absorbed in thought that he barely heard Jamie's cat-like footsteps until they were right up behind him, and it was only when Jamie spoke that he looked up with a faraway look in his eyes. "Oh. Hey, you're up." Xiao's lips twitched into a half-hearted smile and he made room for Jamie to sit too, automatically leaning into him. His head dropped, after only a brief hesitation, onto Jamie's shoulder. Xiao wasn't exactly the overtly affectionate type but undeniably, something about Jamie set him at ease. Others would have said that Jamie intimidated them, or that the sometimes too-hard flash of his eyes perturbed them, but Xiao never felt it. Maybe he was too trusting--he had that habit of wanting to believe in the innate goodness of mankind. He didn't want to look at the world through distrustful eyes. "I'm okay." He wasn't really, but the easiest lie was always the ready lie. Xiao blinked, discreetly passed a hand over his eyes. "What're your plans for today?" Hopefully if he got Jamie to talk about himself, he wouldn't try to dissect Xiao's obviously gloomy mood. ---- @ Jamie Clark | No worries, take your time! <3 Not sitting here glaring, I promise.
