is this freedom, baby ● ● ● ● chasing after danger, making my heart race, maybe if the stars align, maybe if our worlds collide, maybe on the dark side The sun was shining (albeit a little too brightly, but who should get in the way of a sun’s life decisions?), the wind smelled sweet, the plains were spread out before them-- Ophelia breathed in deeply and tried her hardest to forget the person standing next to her. Gareth Oleander, a man she’d been fuming about ever since she met him. For a single, disdainful, moment, she ripped her gaze from the far horizon and fixed them on the Generator, before slowly-- but surely-- forcing a smile. “Shall we, then?” She asked, her tone clipped and cold-- though as soon as she’d heard just how bitter she sounded-- she bit back her temper and turned away from Gareth. She wasn’t usually a mean person, through a strange series of events lead her to lose her temper...and say a few unpleasant things very loudly. After all, all she’d been trying to do was help. He didn’t have to get snippy. Then again, she didn’t have to get huffy about it. This was her job, as an explorer, as a temporary watcher. And, personal grievances aside, Ophelia was set on watching after the Generator, keeping him out of trouble as best she could...with her camera and a paltry journal. If she couldn’t protect him with a weapon, then maybe she could...she could run for help when he got hurt. And vice-versa-- that’s what the buddy-system was for, anyways. She didn’t have to tell Gareth that she didn’t have any weapons. “Where to first?” She asked then, feeling like she had just stepped onto thin ice. @gareth # # # notes MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Even back on Earth, there were very few places where Gareth seemed like he naturally belonged and the outdoors was definitely not one of them. He looked strange and out of place surrounded by nature’s flora and fauna, especially dressed as he was in a rather boring brown cardigan complete with a dress shirt and tie. It was as if he had dressed himself to start a typical nine to five workday instead of for the day hike he was about to embark upon, but that had been his life before Petra Exterior. For well over a decade, sleek technology and blueprints had been his typical backdrop, not fresh air and sunshine, and everything about the mild-mannered man reeked of office life and of structure, rules, and order. Now that he stood underneath Sol’s beaming rays, Gareth was coming to the realization that his life was about to become very different.
He kept his hazel green eyes pointedly forward at the plains surrounding the settlement, quietly taking in the new environment while avoiding eye contact with the woman beside him. The tension between the two was enough to make anyone uncomfortable, even themselves, but Gareth seemed unfazed by the brewing animosity. In fact, he was not even aware of the tenseness between them and his mind did not even register her cold and clipped tone when she addressed him. The Engineer remained noticeably silent as he adjusted the straps of his issued bag on his shoulders and carefully contemplated his words.
“Somewhere high.” Gareth finally replied flatly and inwardly winced at how inhospitable his voice sounded even to his own ears. “I mean… I need to go somewhere high enough for me to obtain a vantage point of the area.” His eyes began to anxiously dart side to side as he tried again to be friendlier but only managed to sound monosyllabic at best. He frowned, not at her, but at himself. There were days when he seemed to be more humane and easy to interact with and days when he seemed to be an emotionless robot. Today, just like their first encounter, his personality seemed to lean towards the latter. For a brief moment, Gareth contemplated apologizing but instead he suddenly began walking towards a set of distant hills that could possibly serve his purpose unless the Explorer knew a better place. “I don’t understand why you have to accompany me. I’m fully capable of taking care of myself.”
