PERSONALITY Though he wouldn't call himself the "dark and brooding” type, he is. Noah comes across as a very unhappy, angry man. Beneath the beard is the wry smile of a man who's seen not one, but two worlds, and still can't muster much more than bemusement. He has a wickedly cynical sense of humour, a scathing tongue, and he often prefers the company offered by a field of crops. What many wouldn't expect, though, is his outstanding moral compass and inability to ignore a person in need. But he blames that on his upbringing.
HISTORY Noah Winters was born in the warm month of August to a pastor's wife in a small town in northern British Columbia. She was in her mid forties when she conceived, and from that point onward Noah was seen, in the eyes of his parents and their little community, as a true gift from God.
He was taught from a very young age the importance of hard work and charity. Instead of playing on sports teams with other kids his age, Noah was helping his parents with church functions and the various outreach programs they'd set up for the local hungry and homeless. By twelve years old Noah knew the true face of poverty - he knew that it could strike anyone at any time, without discrimination. And he saw how these people were treated by the average person.
Scarcely a young adult, and Noah suffered from severe disillusionment. He didn't understand why some people could have everything while others had nothing. How people could ignore the suffering in their own backyards. How a great and merciful God could allow these things to happen
He lost his faith, much to the chagrin of his parents and the community he grew up in. Though he continued his volunteer work all through highschool, he publicly denounced God. His family never gave up hope that he'd come around.
At eighteen, Noah left home to pursue a degree across the country at an agricultural college on the east coast. To some extent, he was still trying to do his parents proud when he chose to major in agronomy, with a focus in sustainable, high-yield farming. He wanted to feed the world.
For nearly a decade, Noah honed his practice in a rural community only two hours from the place he grew up. Every week he sent a portion of all his produce to various food banks around the province.
Working the land provided Noah ample opportunity to withdraw from the society he'd grown so angry with… Until the planet began to die. Until it became glaringly obvious this soil would yield no more fruit for mankind. Until he was being urged to pack five crates of things he'd need in order to try again on a new world.
The last thing Noah did on earth was hug his parents and beg them to come with him, but he knew they'd never abandon their flock. They would all go together on judgement day. Noah didn't have the heart to argue otherwise. He was ushered away by his mother pressing a box of seeds into his hands, and into his bag Noah's father tucked their old family bible. It contained the names, birthdates, dates of marriages, and death dates of his ancestors over the past two centuries.
Once aboard the ship, Noah leafed through scripture he hadn't thought of in years, mourning for the part of himself that would have once believed in a greater fate for those left behind.
He wrote the date beside the names of his parents, and tucked the book away.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS Noah is most readily distinguishable by the thick, black beard he refuses to shave. He says he keeps it so people don't see how much he scowls.
