PERSONALITY Riley has never been one that liked to blend in with the crowd. She likes to stand out and be noticed by those around her, which is why she chose such a wild color to dye her hair.
Upon first meeting Riley she can often come off as rude, mean, and uncaring. Her bedside manner is not always the best, but she does what needs to be done to help those that are under her care. She works quickly and efficiently and is often annoyed by those who do not work on the same level that she does. Riley is stubborn and very direct in the way that she communicates with other people, which is probably why she is thought of as rude and mean. She just doesn't understand dancing around delicate subjects when she can approach them head on and plow right through them. Because of her directness if she doesn't like you you'll know because she'll tell you to your face. In her opinion there is very little worse than a coward who is nice to your face but will talk shit about you behind your back.
Once Riley gets to be friends with someone she is a totally different person. She will dance (like no one's watching), sing (like she's Adele), tell jokes (regardless of how corny they are), and share her precious cigarettes. While she is usually pretty stoic around those she doesn't know she is quick to laugh and smile around those that she likes. Friends have always been extremely important to Riley and because of this she often goes out of her way to help them (unless the request is totally unreasonable) and will protect them if she can.
Riley's view on romantic relationships is that they are best kept with no strings attached. She dated and was engaged to a man on Earth, but the relationship ended badly and the engagement was called off. Now, keeping relationships as 'no strings attached' is a sort of defense mechanism for Riley, because if she doesn't get attached she can't be hurt again. Once things start to get too serious with someone she cuts them off and severs all ties with them and moves on.
HISTORY Riley was born into a family that, by all appearances, was very normal. Her parents owned a three bedroom house, the yard was fenced in, she had a swingset in the back, and a dog. In public, Lucy (Riley's mother) presented herself as a very loving and doting mother and Caleb (her father) was a very loving and attentive husband. In the privacy of their own home, however, things were very different.
Lucy had been in a horrible car accident years before which resulted in severe and constant back pain for her. Doctors warned her against becoming pregnant because of the stress that it would put on her already injured back, but she wanted a family so badly that she had her husband tried for a baby anyway. Lucy became pregnant and after a very difficult pregnancy and delivery Riley was born. Lucy's back was so badly injured, however, that she couldn't even hold her child. She became depressed and had very little interaction with the child that she had wanted so badly. Caleb worked as a mechanic and did his best to care for his wife and his child, but the weight of caring for a newborn and his wife's depression became too much for him to handle. He began having affairs, which only pushed Lucy farther and farther into her depression.
Despite the dysfunction within her family, Riley still managed to be a reasonably happy child. She was often passed off to her grandfathers and would sometimes spend weeks with them before they would take her back home. It was those weeks that she was at her happiest because they would laugh and sing and play games with her. She would beg them not to take her back home, to let her stay with them, but no matter how much she begged she always ended up back home.
As Riley got older her mother's depression continued to worsen and her father's affairs continued. She was still young but had taken on the responsibility of telling her mother to take her medicine, cleaning house, and cooking dinner. She slowly began to resent her parents and would spend as much time away from home as she possibly could. Lucy didn't like her daughter going out as often as she did and the two would fight and argue. Caleb would often get involved and shout at the both of them to shut up and would separate them, but the damage had usually been done by that point.
After one particularly nasty argument between Riley and Lucy, Riley left and went to her grandfathers' house to stay the night. Caleb was out with one of his mistresses and Lucy had been left home alone. While she was by herself she thought about Riley and she thought about Caleb and about how much both of them had hurt her. She got angrier and angrier and finally decided that she was going to do something about it. She wasn't going to let them hurt her anymore. She waited for Caleb to get home and when he did she shot and killed him. A neighbor heard the gunshot and called the police. Lucy was arrested at the house and charged with Caleb's murder.
Riley moved in with her grandfathers and lived with them until she graduated from high school. She attended all of her mother's court hearings, but never shed a tear even as she was sentenced to life in prison. Over the years Lucy wrote to Riley and tried to apologize to her, but Riley refused to read the letters. She would tear them up and throw them in the trash and go on about her life.
She became an EMT. She met a man (Jake) and fell in love. It was a whirlwind romance that was unlike anything she'd ever experienced. He made her happy and she actually wanted to spend as much time with him as she could. Everyone said that they were a perfect match and she couldn't agree more. He proposed to her on New Years Eve and she was excited about starting a new chapter in her life. Things couldn't have been better.
Until they weren't.
History always seems to repeat itself in one way or another, and such was the case for Riley. She and Jake had moved in together a month after their engagement. One night, while Riley was working the night shift, she stopped at home to change her uniform and caught Jake with another woman in their bed. Riley was devastated, angry, betrayed, disgusted ... she couldn't believe it. Somehow, Jake managed to talk her into forgiving him, to give him another chance because it was a stupid mistake and she means nothing. i love you baby'. Riley agreed to give him another chance ...... then she caught him again. The second time she and Jake fought physically before he threatened to call the police if she didn't leave. It was only the fear of losing her job that made Riley leave.
Shortly after Riley moved back in with her grandfathers until she could get a place of her own, but that wouldn't happen. The evacuation of Earth was ordered and Riley spent most of her time packing away medical supplies to take with her to Petra Exterior. Just before she left she went to the prison where her mother was locked up for a first and last visit.
